How Zelda: Ocarina of Time Could Be Even Better on Switch

The Legend of Zelda series is considered by many to be one of the top dogs at Nintendo. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a magnificent, towering achievement for its time with state of the art visuals, storytelling, and gameplay and still holds up pretty well.

An HD remake of Ocarina of Time has been rumored to be in development for some time now, and while it remains to be seen, any official announcement thereof would likely be well-received by fan. This more-than 20-year old game still has a lot of charm left that, if capitalized efficiently, could add a lot of value to the Switch’s already stellar library of exclusives.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has a lot of features to love, ranging from its simplistic, yet effective storytelling and distinctly blocky characters. Time travel, the main hook of the game, is seamlessly woven into the gameplay and narrative. Most of the game is split into decently-sized chunks which encourages burst-play sessions. However, the narrative is captivating and can keep players hooked for long stretches of time even then.

The Switch features a docked mode and a portable mode, ultimately making it one of the best places to revisit this Legend of Zelda classic if Nintendo would just put out a decent port for it. The Switch’s motion controls could also prove beneficial to the merits of the game. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D features a lot of quality of life improvements such as gyro-aiming which could translate very well to the Switch.

That being said, Nintendo really needs to put in a lot more effort into translating the game over to the Switch. The 3DS version of Ocarina of Time is simply too claustrophobic for a bigger screen, and the visual inconsistencies it had got hidden behind the low resolution it offered. As a result, this would be very visible and offputting if ported directly to the Switch. The Switch also features 2 analog sticks as compared to just one on the 3Ds and N64, which could pose a lot of problems to newer gamers getting adjusted to this older style of controls, but that’s small potatoes compared to many other things.

All of this does make a strong case for the game to get a major overhaul. If it does happen, it could very well give this game a brand new audience of young and impressionable players. At the same time, gamers who grew up playing this game are sure to get a great reason to pick up a Nintendo Switch for themselves.

As much as fans are hoping for a major overhaul, possibly even a remake, it seems off the table for now. Nintendo has been remaking some of its games for the newer systems, with The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and The Legend Of Zelda: Link’s Awakening being some of the highlights. Both of these games receivied major visual upgrades while paying homage to what made them great in the first place.

This treatment sadly hasn’t transferred to most games on the N64. Super Mario 64 just got re-released on the Nintendo Switch under Super Mario 3D: All-Stars with no major upgrades. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask received ports on the Nintendo 3DS sometime ago. Though exceptional in their own right, these games surely left a lot to be desired. With the franchise’s 35th anniversary right around the corner, a surprise announcement could definitely get the fans excited again, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available on N64 and Nintendo 3Ds.
