Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Passes Impressive Sales Milestone

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild released in 2017 as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch and since then, fans have been clamoring for a follow-up to the game. Breath of the Wild 2 is on the way and could possibly release sometime this year in honor of Zelda’s 35th anniversary, but to make the wait a bit easier, Nintendo collaborated with Koei Tecmo and Omega Force to create a prequel title to Breath of the Wild.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is set 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild and explores the struggle between the citizens of Hyrule and Calamity Ganon and his powerful army of monsters. Zelda and Link work together to gather the four Champions but instead of the traditional Zelda gameplay, Age of Calamity is a Musou-styled game, similar to the first Hyrule Warriors game on Wii U and the Dynasty Warriors series, which are both also developed by Omega Force.

And even though the gameplay style is different from what Zelda traditionally is, Age of Calamity has still managed to become the single best-selling Musou game of all time, according to Koei Tecmo’s latest earnings report. The title has sold over 3.5 million units since its release back on November 20th, 2020, for the Nintendo Switch.

Considering how well the Switch has been performing in terms of sales, it only makes sense that Age of Calamity would sell like hotcakes. Breath of the Wild has been recognized as one of the best games of all time and even if its prequel is a Musou game, fans are still going to dive into it regardless.

The Zelda series isn’t the only franchise to have a Musuo spin-off title. Next month, Atlus and Omega Force will be releasing Persona 5 Strikers on Switch, PC, and PS4. The narrative is set after the events of Persona 5 but the gameplay is more hack and slash, similar to Age of Calamity.

And as far as the upcoming sequel of Breath of the Wild is concerned, Nintendo has yet to announce a release date or show any sort of gameplay footage.

In Game Rant’s scored review for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, it was given a 4 out of 5 with the reviewer stating that “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is worth the investment for this gameplay loop, far more than other Koei Tecmo and Nintendo crossovers like Fire Emblem Warriors. It’s satisfying both mechanically and for world-building that enriches its universe.”

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is available for the Nintendo Switch.
