Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is almost here and Nintendo has been slowly but surely trickling out new information as the release date closes in. Recently, Nintendo revealed a ton of new information about the Bowser’s Fury expansion, giving players an idea about the gameplay and length of the new content.
However, the base experience of Super Mario 3D World is also going to be getting some welcome changes when it arrives on Switch. Nintendo UK’s official website for the game now confirms that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will make use of gyro controls in certain portions of the game as a workaround for sections that previously required touch controls.
Fans already had an idea of the sort of changes that they would see in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, as the initial reveal trailer hinted at a handful of gameplay tweaks. Fans quickly discovered that the overall movement speed of Super Mario 3D World was increased on Switch when compared to the Wii U version. However, the Wii U version also had sections of the gameplay that relied on touch controls, which would be somewhat difficult to carry over to the Switch. Now, fans have explicit confirmation from Nintendo that gyro controls will supplement those sections of gameplay that relied on touch controls in the Switch version of 3D World.
Nintendo UK’s website is likely referring to the Captain Toad sections of Super Mario 3D World, which are scattered about the game’s various worlds. Super Mario 3D World‘s Captain Toad sections will most likely play similarly to how the Switch port of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker handled gyro controls. Though the Wii U version of Treasure Tracker relied heavily on touch controls, the Switch version added heavy gyro support involving an on-screen cursor that players would use to interact with levels. It was a neat solution that saved players from having to play the entire game in the Switch’s handheld mode.
Additionally, though not confirmed as of yet, it’s likely that touch control options will still be available to players playing in handheld mode, as was the case with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Switch. The UK website also confirms another gameplay tweak, mentioning that players will be able to climb even further when using the Super Bell powerup. All of these gameplay tweaks are welcome changes to the game and should serve to make the experience just that much more enjoyable for players looking to revisit it after so long. When comparing footage of the Wii U version of Super Mario 3D World and the Switch version, the difference is plain to see.
Though the new content seems limited to these gameplay tweaks and the Bowser’s Fury expansion, Super Mario 3D World is an amazing platformer in its own right. Those Switch owners looking forward to revisiting this gem or playing it for the first time should keep an eye out as February approaches. February 2021 is a stacked month for Switch games, seeing releases such as Bravely Default 2 and Persona 5 Strikers alongside Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will launch on February 12 for the Nintendo Switch.
