While the Resident Evil showcase event on January 21 revealed a lot about Resident Evil 8, there are still many unanswered questions about the upcoming survival-horror game. In the days since the Resident Evil showcase event, Capcom has updated the Resident Evil 8 Steam database page, adding new terms that reveal some surprising details about what fans can expect from the game come its launch on May 7.
As spotted by Rely On Horror, the Steam database page for Resident Evil 8 has been updated to add Sexual Content and Open World tags. Curious fans asked proven Resident Evil leaker AestheticGamer exactly what these tags could mean, as Capcom has not given any indication that Resident Evil 8 is a true open world game. And if AestheticGamer’s information is correct, “open world” may not equate to what most people associate the term with.
It doesn’t seem as though Resident Evil 8 will have a massive sprawling map like most open world games. AestheticGamer claims that the Resident Evil 8 development team describes the game as a Metroidvania title. What this means is that every area in Resident Evil 8 is connected, with players needing to return to previously visited areas more often than in other Resident Evil games. This kind of design is not really new to the franchise, though, as it doesn’t sound too far off from the first Resident Evil game, which took place in a mansion with many connected areas. So while some fans may be turned off by the “open world” moniker, it sounds like it will actually be very faithful to Resident Evil‘s roots.
As far as sexual content goes, AestheticGamer claims that there is nudity in Resident Evil 8. More specifically, Resident Evil 8‘s main villains, the vampire-like women that can transform into moths, appear naked in the game for brief moments. He went on to say that the women can transform into “crawling spider things, which are not very attractive,” so it will be interesting to see that play out in-game.
Resident Evil 8‘s vampire ladies have become quite popular among the community, with Lady Dimitrescu, who is apparently the leader of the group and has been so named as she rules Castle Dimitrescu, proving to be especially popular. There has already been a flood of Lady Dimitrescu cosplays and fan art, and there will likely be even more once the game itself is out later this year.
While the Resident Evil 8 release date is not until May 7, PS5 owners can get a taste of what to expect by checking out the Maiden demo that’s currently available to download. Capcom has said a second demo is in the works as well, though details on that have yet to be revealed at the time of this writing.
Resident Evil 8 launches May 7 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
