As the months roll on, more and more franchises and media giants pick their sides in the streaming wars. One of the latest services to spin up their wheels is Peacock, hot off the heels of a rebranding that also saw them acquire the exclusive rights to The Office, is busy snapping up even more content to entice viewers on to its platform. This latest announcement isn’t the typical limited series or movie release, however.
In fact, Peacock is getting something rarely secured on streaming platforms: the rights to professional wrestling. According to Deadline, the platform has struck an estimated billion-dollar deal with the WWE, bringing nearly 17,000 hours of the company’s existing library to NBCUniversal’s premium subscription tiers.
This is a significant deal for Peacock, as WWE is the biggest name in wrestling, and has been for a very long time now. Since wrestling became a business around the 1950s, the WWE (originally the WWF) has been one of the biggest players, eventually beating out the competition and becoming the biggest wrestling promoter in the business. Their lineup has included stars like John Cena, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
Some of WWE’s biggest names were not only legends in wrestling but went on to have prominent careers outside the ring as well. Dwayne Johnson is one of the most obvious, but Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, and Dave Bautista all branched into acting from the WWE, using their wrestling reputation as a springboard for film appearances.
Given how long the WWE has been around, and the numerous events, personalities, and iconic moments it has hosted, that’s a lot of content coming exclusive to Peacock. This deal sees the WWE Network come included with Peacock, which includes both on-demand content including pay-per-view events like WrestleMania, as well as a 24/7 live channel that will broadcast selected material like a traditional TV channel.
So in one fell swoop, it seems as though Peacock has quite easily set itself up as the platform of choice for wrestling fans out there. No other platform offers up quite the amount of wrestling content that Peacock is now primed to host, and it will be a hard offer to refuse for anyone interested in the WWE library. The content will start dropping in March, according to the company.
WWE content is coming to Peacock starting March 18th.
