Pokemon GO: Latias and Latios Counters (January 2021 Update)

There are multiple powerful legendary Pokemon that players can encounter in Pokemon GO. Although many are limited to events, special research tasks, or limited-time raids, it is very common to see them active in the GO Battle League.

Latios and Latias are two legendary Pokemon that used to be very easy to get in Pokemon GO. Because of this, some players use them in the game’s PVP scene, among other powerful and legendary Pokemon.

Both Latios and Latias share the same dual typing of Psychic and Dragon. This also means that they share the same weaknesses of Fairy, Ghost, Dark, Dragon, Ice, and Bug-type moves. The two also share their resistances to Fighting, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, and Fire-type moves.

While it may seem risky, there are multiple Dragon-type Pokemon that can use a combination of moves to take down Latios and Latias. These Pokemon are:

  • Black Kyurem – Dragon Tail and Outrage or Blizzard
  • Palkia – Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor
  • Rayquaza – Dragon Tail and Outrage
  • Salamence – Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor
  • White Kyurem – Dragon Breath and Blizzard

Of course, the recommended Dragon-type Pokemon are mostly legendary Pokemon themselves. Many players won’t have access to these Pokemon however, making it less recommended to even try using another Dragon-type against either Latios or Latias. Thankfully, they have other weaknesses that can be exploited.

While more powerful Fairy-types will be coming when more of the Kalos region is implemented in Pokemon GO, there are still a few that are effective against Latios and Latias. They are:

  • Gardevoir – Charm and Dazzling Gleam
  • Togekiss – Charm and Dazzling Gleam
  • Granbull – Charm and Play Rough

One of the ways to take advantage of Latios and Latias being part Psychic-type is by using Ghost-type Pokemon. The better ones to use against them are:

  • Origin Form Giratina – Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Chandelure – Hex and Shadow Ball
  • Genfar – Shadow Claw or Lick and Shadow Ball

Like with the Ghost-type Pokemon, Dark-types are also a great way to take advantage of Latios and Latias’ weaknesses. Some of the better choices are:

  • Tyranitar – Bite and Crunch
  • Weavile – Ice Shard and Avalanche
  • Darkrai – Snarl and Shadow Ball or Dark Pulse

Ice types are effective when it comes to taking down the majority of Dragon-type Pokemon in Pokemon GO. With it being winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it is also one of the better times to hunt for them in the wild. The best ones to bring up against Latios and Latias however, are:

  • Mamoswine – Powder Snow and Avalanche
  • Weavile – Ice Shard and Avalanche
  • Galarian Darmanitan – Ice Fang and Avalance

Finally, Bug-type Pokemon are usually easy to find and evolve. While many aren’t known for their power in battle, these ones can be quite effective for this match-up:

  • Pinsir – Bug Bite or Fury Cutter and X-Scissor
  • Scizor – Fury Cutter and X-Scissor
  • Genesect – Fury Cutter and X-Scissor

Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
