Assassin’s Creed Valhalla offers players a huge open world that is packed with content, but not all of that content hits the mark. For the most part, fans have been enjoying the numerous raids and tracking down mysteries, artifacts, and wealth scattered across England, but there’s one thing in particular that they aren’t enjoying in the slightest. Animus Anomalies start out as neat little puzzles that bring Layla into 9th century England for a brief moment, but as players progress they quickly become tedious and overly complicated. The Anomaly in Snotingham is particularly offensive in this regard, especially thanks to its lack of meaningful checkpoints.
When solving this puzzle, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla players will need to know a few terms. Unstable Structures appear as transparent platforms, and they must have a beam of light hit them in order to be used. In this case, these beams of light come from Intermittent Processors, pillars that shoot out light in set intervals. Finally, Draggable Reflectors can be moved around in order to reflect beams of light that strike them at a predetermined angle.
To kick things off, head up the stone stairs and jump across the Unstable Structure, being careful to time the jump as it is being held up by an Intermittent Processor. Jump across the beams and drag the Draggable Reflector so that it will direct the beam of light and stabilizes a vertical platform in the distance. While avoiding the red obstacle, players then need to angle the Intermittent Processor to the right of the red field at the reflector. Quickly climb the Unstable Structure to reach the second level of the tower, and thank Ubisoft for popularizing tower climbing in open world games.
Jump across to the right and reposition the Draggable Reflector so that the intermittent light beam strikes it and stabilizes the shorter Unstable Structure on the left side. Players then need to time their jump so that they can make it across before the platform disappears beneath their feet. This step can be difficult unless players anticipate when the beam is going to fire off, but what else would fans expect from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla? Here players will find yet another Intermittent Projector, but this one should be aimed at the longer platform on the right side of the reflector. Hop back across and move the Draggable Reflector back over so that both intermittent lights keep the platform stable and run across.
From here, angle this intermittent Projector up at one of the vertical Unstable Structures leading to the third floor of the tower. Repeat the steps needed to get across the shorter Unstable Platform one more time and point that light at the second vertical Unstable Structure. Now players should be able to jump back across and climb up to the third floor of this nightmarish tower. Unfortunately, things only get more difficult from here on out, and the lack of checkpoints means that players of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla may repeat the same mistakes many times. These two vertical Unstable Structures need to be climbed quickly as they will disappear.
On the third floor, don’t start climbing the pillars as the final one will glitch out before players can make it across. This Assassin’s Creed Valhalla glitch won’t be patched any time soon since it is intended. Instead, jump across the Unstable Structures leading downward. From here, angle the two Intermittent Projectors to stabilize the triangular step and rectangular Unstable Stuctures. Climb up these (it will require careful timing), and then jump through the third Unstable Structure while it is not being stabilized by the Intermittent Projector on the other side. Turn around and climb up the one Layla just jumped through and find another Draggable Reflector. Position this so that the intermittent light strikes it and stabilizes the highest Unstable Structure back by the pillars.
Now jump back down to the two Intermittent Projectors from earlier and turn them back around to stabilize the large platform used to get down originally. Back at the tower with the pillars, climb up while carefully timing jumps until reaching a moving platform. Thankfully, this is stable so players don’t have to worry about it disappearing, but there’s still an element of timing as the platforms are all moving. Eventually, this should lead players to the top of the tower where they can claim the Animus Anomaly and witness another cryptic Isu cutscene. They’ll also get a decent chunk of experience to help Eivor reach the max power level.
What makes this Animus Anomaly particularly frustrating is the way the checkpoints are handled at the end. Throughout most of the tower climb, if players fall they’ll respawn without much issue, but at the end that changes. The final portion of this tower climb only has one checkpoint, so between retracing Eivor’s steps, climbing up the Unstable Structures by the pillars, and navigating the moving platforms, there are a lot of ways for players to die and have to do all of that over again. Ubisoft wouldn’t need to rework the puzzle, but more checkpoints during this ending sequence would be greatly appreciated by fans.
This is the ninth anomaly out of ten, so players should be almost done at this point if they are doing them in order of each region’s power level. To find the final one, players will have to head to Hamtunscire, one of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s most powerful regions. This anomaly is similarly challenging to Snotinghamscire’s, so players that struggled here may want to take a break before tackling it. Thankfully, there are plenty of other secrets to discover in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that players can occupy themselves with in the meantime while they recover.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
