While many companies opt to reveal projects early on, sometimes far too early, Nintendo has typically gone the opposite direction and kept most projects shrouded in mystery sometimes to a frustrating degree. While 2020 may not have had a ton of killer AAA titles from Nintendo, many are hoping that 2021 sees a number of must-have exclusives finally launch on the Switch. One of those games in particular is the curiously absent Bayonetta 3.
Originally announced with a simple teaser image at the 2017 Game Awards, Bayonetta 3 has flown so far under the radar that fans began to wonder over the years if the project was ultimately canceled. While minor updates have been given here and there, series creator Hideki Kamiya finally gave fans some hope when he confirmed that development on Bayonetta 3 is going very well and that the new gameplay mechanics are working great. While Kamiya hopes to give players a sizable update in 2021, it seems that won’t actually be happening for quite some time.
In a recent interview regarding the studio’s plans for 2021, Kamiya admitted that he’s aware the lack of news is driving Bayonetta 3 fans crazy. While he’s unable to provide any sort of news currently, he went on to suggest that “maybe we should all reset and forget about Bayonetta 3.” While this isn’t meant to be a negative comment, he explained is reasoning further by saying, “when something finally does happen, it will be a nice surprise, won’t it?”
While this isn’t likely what fans were hoping to hear, it seems that for now, the decision is out of Kamiya’s hands and likely with Nintendo which is publishing the game. However, he offers a little bit of hope saying that it is still January, hinting that it’s probably safe to expect news of some sort as the year progresses. After all, there are still 11 months left in 2021 so it’s a given that something it likely going to happen this year.
It’s not really our position to say, but… it’s January. We’ve got to have something come out, right? I guess it’s safe to expect that something will come out. There’s still a lot of the year left is what I’m saying.
While fans continue to wait for any sort of Bayonetta 3 news, it seems 2021 is going to continue to be a very busy year for the entire Platinum Games studio. In addition to Bayonetta, the studio is working on a number of projects, many of which continue to be a relative mystery for fans. Kamiya’s also working on his Project G.G. title, the studio is collaborating with Square Enix on Babylon’s Fall, there’s also a new live ops title in development at the new Tokyo-based location, and the studio recently teased something known as Platinum Four.
Bayonetta 3 is in development exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
