Whether it was Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or any other collect-em-all type games played by children all across the U.S. and beyond, pretty much every schoolyard had some sort of passing fad toy that just about everyone clamoring to get their hands on. For some kids, that particular toy was Beyblade, a toy-line of spinning tops that were meant to battle each other in pulse-pounding duels where the winner was determined by little more than physics and luck.
Their height of popularity was around the same time as Yu-Gi-Oh! and though the spinning top toys themselves had little in the way of backstory or characters, they nonetheless had their own share of televised projects. In fact, the original toys were released alongside a manga also titled Beyblade. The series, fittingly, focused on a group of kids who teamed up and battle each other using the spinning top toys.
Of course, it wasn’t long until that manga got adapted into an anime, also called Beyblade. That series ran for 3 seasons and was continually revived and spun-off under various names for many years. As of today, there have no less than 4 versions of the Beyblade anime, alongside 2 feature films. Whatever one may think of basing an entire franchise off of spinning tops, it clearly found an audience that stuck with it for some time.
Now the latest version of the anime, Beyblade Burst, is revving up to release very soon and the news has recently broken that the show will premiere in the U.S. next month. The latest season, Beyblade Burst Surge will find a home on Disney XD and is set to premiere on February 20th with a new episode every Saturday.
The story of this latest installment focuses on brothers Hikaru and Hyūga Asahi facing off in an all-star Beyblade battle against so-called “Legendary Bladers” from the Burst series. This season will release with a new line of toys as well tying into the anime and the manga will also be getting a new arc to complement the anime.
Those who remember spinning Beyblades in their youth or just want to see what it’s all about might want to set their calendars for the premiere. No doubt there will be plenty of people, both new fans and nostalgic audiences, tuning in to see the latest version of the long-running IP.
Beyblade Burst Surge will premiere on Disney XD on February 20, 2021.
