Throughout Stardew Valley, players will grow a variety of fruits and vegetables that can be sold, used for recipes, and contributed to the Community Center bundles. While many of these can be simply grown on players’ farms, one vegetable needs to be foraged from the outside.
Out of all the items that players can forage in Stardew Valley, Fiddlehead Ferns are the only ones that are categorized as vegetables. They are also some of the rarest vegetables to find with them only being available during one season before players reach Ginger Island.
There are two Community Center bundles that require Fiddlehead Ferns in order to complete them. The first is the Chef’s Bundle available through the Community Center bulletin board when using the normal bundle pack. The second bundle is only available through the new remixed bundles option, being the Wild Medicine Bundle through the Craft’s Room.
The easiest way to get Fiddlehead Ferns is by looking for them in the Secret Woods during the summer season. In order to enter, players need to chop down the fallen log that’s located in the northwest corner of Cindersap Forest. Players can find Cindersap Forest by leaving through the south exit of their farm.
If players have a normal axe, they will not be able to chop down the log blocking the path. Players will need a steel axe or better with the log breaking into eight pieces of hardwood once it’s chopped. Axes and other tools can be upgraded by talking to Clint in Pelican Town.
After players enter the Secret Woods, there will be multiple hardwood stumps, slime enemies, and forage items. The type of slimes and what forage items are available depends on the season players enter the Secret Woods. If players enter during the summer, Fiddlehead Ferns will be the most common forage item there.
There are two more places where players can find Fiddlehead Ferns, but they are not limited to summer. These would be the Skull Cavern located in the Calico Desert and the jungles of Ginger Island. For Skull Cavern, players can find Fiddlehead Ferns as a possible forage item on Prehistoric Floors. With Ginger Island, players can just simply find Fiddlehead Ferns as a forage item around the jungle.
Fiddlehead Ferns are liked by every villager in Stardew Valley except for Abigail, Haley, Jas, Sam, and Vincent who all dislike it. It can be pickled in a preserves jar or made into juice in a keg to increase its value, as well as be used as an ingredient in Fiddlehead Risotto.
Stardew Valley is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
