The Medium is a psychological horror adventure that enables players to travel through the spirit realm to solve puzzles and avoid dark entities called “The Maw.” The twisted world of the undead introduces new gameplay mechanics that players can utilize to bypass certain segments. Very akin to Silent Hill, The Medium blurs realities as the main protagonist, Marianne, travels to a Polish resort to discover the origins of her psychic powers.
There’s a lot to find while playing through The Medium. As Marianne gathers clues to figure out the essence of her abilities, she will encounter The Maw, who is tied to the “Phantom” achievement. After a chase sequence through a corridor early in the game, there will be the first stealth sequence of the game to get through. The Maw will be stomping through the maze, looking for Marianne. Just wait until it inches toward her, then he will turn around and head in the other direction. This is a good time to sneak up. When a bunch of moths flutters around, and the camera shifts overhead, this is the cue that the Maw is going to reappear. Just crouch behind the boxes until he walks away.
Carefully follow behind him and zig-zag between each box to stand hidden. The Maw will eventually circle around and bypass Marianne. There will be a small cave not too far ahead, patiently sneak into it and shift back into the physical world. In The Medium, players are encouraged to shift to the physical world regularly. In this case, look for the locker room. When players find themselves in the locker room, head back to the far end of the room and enter the hole in the wall. Players will hear the Maw stomping after her. Run to the end of the room and duck behind the crate.
Just wait until the Maw angrily kicks open the locked door to the right side of Marianne. In Medium, there is no way to attack The Maw, so don’t try. He will walk through the door and dissipate. It’ll be safe to enter the door and walk into the “Examination Room” across the hallway. This will lead to a large room with sheets draped over the furniture. There, players will find the Maw scavenging the area for Marianne. Crouch behind the nearest crate and wait until he walks away. Sneak up to the left side of the draped furniture and make way to the “small crawling space” within the barricade. After sneaking through, shimmy between the shelves and duck down behind the desk.
When the Maw walks past Marianne, sneak through the doorway that’s ahead of her. Marianne’s powers enable her to hear the Maw, even in physical form when in other rooms. Walk down the hallway until Marianne squeezes between some stacked furniture. The Maw will be still searching the hallways, when players hear him, just duck behind a desk or crate until he goes away. Make way to the door that’s locked with chains that enter the stairway. Use the bolt cutters to break the chains and walk through the door. Once players do this the “Phantom” Achievement will be completed.
