Sticking to one type of hero in DOTA 2 doesn’t exactly do your teammates any favor. Being a one-trick-pony means you’re not the most flexible team player around. Still, focusing on a certain hero category is a good way to familiarize yourself with DOTA 2’s mechanics and one of the most forgiving kinds of heroes in DOTA 2 is of the Strength-type.
It’s because Strength heroes usually have high HP pools, meaning you can make plenty of mistakes while piloting them. Additionally, they fit in well in the tank or initiator role, charging head-first into combat, and are usually still the last to be left standing depending on the player. You want the current best in that class for this META, so look no further than these strong contenders.
10 Magnus
Every good team needs a solid Strength-type initiator and not many can match Magnus for that role. His ultimate skill, Reverse Polarity, can ruin the enemy’s plan faster than they can react. That does make Magnus a target of stun abilities but that can easily be remedied.
Meanwhile, his other abilities either make him a powerful lane pusher especially with the cleave, or will improve his initiator tendencies, especially with Horn Toss and Skewer. Both abilities ensure that stragglers don’t get a chance to escape.
9 Snapfire
Snapfire would be another popular choice for Strength heroes due to its flexibility. This dragon rider duo also has some deceitfully cute appearance and anyone who underestimates her and her cute pet ride are sure to ger roasted.
Like the usual ranged-Strength-type hero, Snapfire might seem unfair and any opponent killed by her and Mortimer, her dragon toad might agree. Snapfire and Mortimer focus on providing large blankets of area damage while also keeping the pressure on enemy teams with area stun abilities. The fact that it’s a ranged hero is just a bonus but nevertheless makes her more evasive.
8 Phoenix
Speaking of flying Strength heroes, Phoenix is one wildcard of a character. He’s a ranged hero with plenty of HP to spare and can fit into many roles. It can do support, carry, and initiator. Despite the Strength stat, you might want to avoid tanking too much as Phoenix has abilities better used for a different purpose.
Phoenix’s ultimate ability, Supernova, synergizes well with most of her other skills. In fact, you can abuse Supernova to get the most out of Phoenix especially when pairing the ultimate ability with Sun Ray, one of her most powerful offensive tools. Anything else will either deal more damage or slow down the enemies.
7 Undying
You don’t have to second guess what the Almighty Dirge or Undying is capable of. The name says it all. He’s a true tank and while most tanks remain rather rigid or strong only in the early game, Dirge is a bit different since he’s also a formidable spellcaster.
Apart from being able to transfer the enemy’s health to himself or his allies, Dirge can also summon some pesky Zombies that slow down anything they attack and are also immune to spells. Of course, true to his name, Undying has Reincarnation with a 300-second cooldown, making him difficult to remove from the fight.
6 Kaolin/Earth Spirit
Earth Spirit or Kaolin might be a bit fiddly for anyone who’s used to Strength heroes being mostly initiators or tanks, but in the right hands, he shines in the mid lane. Kaolin’s plethora of crowd control and disruption abilities make him a walking disaster for the enemy team.
Kaolin’s abilities revolve around another of his abilities, called Stone Remnants. He can toy around with these remnants for damage bonuses or send them flying to the enemies for some devastating stun combos. Due to their increased amount of micromanagement, Kaolin’s learning curve is higher.
5 Rizzrack/Timbersaw
Of course, Strength-type DPS heroes also exist and Rizzrack or Timbersaw has proven that such a combination can strike fear into the hearts of the enemy. A competent Timbersaw player can bag some Double or Triple Kills quite easily if they’re lucky enough.
Don’t expect that sort of opportunity to be handed out readily, however. Rizzrack’s damage output likes to consider the number of trees in the area. More trees mean more damage, making him a formidable hero when it comes to jungle clashes or ambushes.
4 Ostarion/Wraith King
Much like Undying, Ostarion or Wraith King is a tank that just won’t die. He also boasts the Reincarnation passive though his is much better as it has a lower cooldown and added gimmicks. Unlike Undying, however, he’s simpler to use and more straightforward.
He either excels in dealing tons of damage or soaking up tons of damage. By far, this also makes Wraith King one of the most versatile heroes to use since he can also excel in being a carry and a late-game nuker due to his damage potential.
3 Karroch/Beastmaster
Yet another versatile Strength hero would be Karroch or Beastmaster. While many consider him an offlaner and sometimes even jungler, Beastmaster can push like nobody’s business and even make enemy heroes retreat from a lane due to his overwhelming minions.
His boar can slow down any target and his hawk can be used as a valuable spy, granting the team a significant strategic advantage especially for ganking. In this regard, the Beastmaster can easily hunt down some solo heroes too and profit from their lonesome situation.
2 Mars
In the current DOTA 2 meta, Mars is typically considered the most powerful offlaner. His aggressive abilities make him a scourge on the battlefield and it would be folly to fight him solo or one-on-one. In addition to having a low-cooldown offensive skill, he also has numerous chances of knocking back enemies.
In addition to having an impressive area skill that locks in enemies and continuously damages them, Mars can double as a tank especially with Bulwark. Meanwhile, God’s Rebuke and his Spear can make quick work of stragglers or even melee gankers.
1 Banehallow/Lycan
Now, for those looking to cheese and win the game in its current meta or state, look no further than Banehallow or Lycan. The community consensus is that he was “accidentally” made overpowered by the recent updates. Now, he can run a pack of wolves each with a high critical chance and farming potential as well as pushing prowess.
Of course, the enemy team can easily avoid an overpowered Lycan by not picking a fight with him during nighttime but too bad their towers nor their base can’t hide from the werewolf. With the current frustration towards the hero right now tough, don’t expect this overpowered state to last.
