Minecraft: How to Make Green Dye | Game Rant

In Minecraft, player creativity is actively encouraged. Even with its somewhat limited structure, almost anything is possible if players are able to think big enough. All that said, survival mode limits that creativity a bit, requiring players to gather up the resources they need for their projects, and this holds true for colored dyes as well. The way to get most dyes is pretty obvious, ink sacs are black dye and red flowers make red dye, for example, but green dye is a different story. In order for players to get and use green dye, they must use cactus, but not in the way they might expect.

Dye has a variety of uses in Minecraft, with the most basic one being to color wool or sheep. Outside of this, it can also be used to customize banners, create different colored beds, color armor and fireworks, and so much more. Green dye is a bit more uncommon than others due to how it is crafted, so it can stand out quite a bit.

In reality, players can’t craft green dye, as they have to smelt it instead. Simply gather a piece of cactus, place it in a furnace or blast furnace, and add any type of fuel below. It cooks the exact same way that any meat would, but when it is done it will produce green dye and a small bit of experience. At the time of writing, this is the only way for players craft green dye in Minecraft.

For those that don’t want to go looking for a cactus there are two other ways to obtain it. Players that find themselves in a desert village have a chance to find it in a chest, although at that point it would be easy enough to just smelt some cactus. For those players that aren’t anywhere near a desert village, the wandering trader has a chance to sell it as well. In this case, players can get three green dye per emerald they trade to him. Of course, players could also always enter creative mode to get the item or use the /give command.

With how many uses dyes can have, players wanting to use green may need to find quite a few cacti since it’s best to save Minecraft‘s emeralds for other things. Thankfully, due to how a cactus grows, it can be farmed and harvested similarly to sugar cane. Simply only break off the top two blocks of cactus and they will eventually grow back.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
