The revival of Lucasfilm Games has reignited much of the gaming community’s excitement for potential Star Wars projects, especially with the announcement of Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s open-world Star Wars game – the first non-EA published Star Wars game in almost a decade (not counting Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens). One of the projects that has fans excited is the possibility of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic reboot, but before then fans could be treated to remasters of the original two PC and Xbox titles.
Rumors of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic being rebooted originated in early 2020, when Disney and Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: The High Republic, a multi-media Star Wars series set in the post-Disney Star Wars canon. This was preceded by an appearance from KOTOR villain Darth Revan in the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary, which introduced the character into the Disney canon, while KOTOR and its sequel were still considered Star Wars Legends canon.
After the announcement of Lucasfilm Games’ revival, B.O.B Podcast host Bespin Bulletin revealed he learned that a Knights of the Old Republic reboot was in development from a surprising studio, which Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier backed up. Now, Cinelinx Editor-in-Chief Jordan Maison revealed on Twitter that he has heard remasters of the original two titles are in development for modern consoles alongside the reboot.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was originally released for PC and Xbox in 2003 by Dragon Age developer BioWare, and much of the game’s staff would later go on to create the Mass Effect series in 2007 including director Casey Hudson. In 2004, only a year after the release of the original game, Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment released Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords for PC and Xbox. Both games are praised as two of the greatest western RPGs ever made.
While a reboot of Knights of the Old Republic is still nothing but speculation, remasters of the original two games would be a welcome way to introduce fans to the series, especially as it takes place hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga. It could also introduce fans to its memorable characters and locations before they are reimagined in a potential reboot. What brings this possibility into question is the fact that the two titles are already playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility, which already upscales the games. Fans will have to wait for any official announcements.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available now for PC and Xbox, the game is compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
