A mall in Brazil has opened up a new playground with a distinct Sonic theme that puts young fans of Sega’s character right into the Green Hill Zone from the classic games. The entire playground appears to be a combination of classic and modern Sonic content, which might help the appeal that the mall is looking for, as the play space is for both children and adults.
The new play area recently opened in Shopping Vila Velha, a shopping mall in Brazil, which has used its space for similar attractions before, though this is the first specific to the Sonic brand. Altogether, the small, themed space is a competent recreation of the Green Hill Zone area, at least to the degree that could be achieved in the limited space available.
Fans looking to visit Shopping Vila Velha in Brazil to see the new attraction can check out the area during its operating periods for roughly $30 for a half-hour in the space. Looking at what the playground has available, it hits the visual themes of the Sonic series fairly well, with specially made ring boxes, Green Hill Zone styled slides, and a series of padded rings to pass through. It’s definitely the type of thing that young Sonic fans would be interested in visiting, even if its only a single trip for the experience.
It isn’t entirely clear, however, if this new playground is officially licensed, or if the pop-up playground is being run solely by Shopping Vila Velha, outside of Sega’s control. For one, the Sonic art that is littered around the playground is all over the place, with larger than life cutouts of the classic version of Sonic, as well as more recent interpretations. In YouTuber Badnik Mechanic’s video on the park, the content creator even notices a piece of Sonic X related artwork, which isn’t exactly the most relevant interpretation of the character that Sega would usually advertise with.
As for visiting the playground itself, there are strict rules displayed on Shopping Vila Velha’s website regarding entering while having contracted any infectious disease, which might make making the trip difficult in 2021. Regardless, Sonic fans can still appreciate the limited images and video footage that has begun popping up online about this themed play area. For now, that will likely have to be enough for most, especially considering how difficult travel to and from countries like Brazil has become over the last year.
