Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale Apex Legends remains a popular, stand-out title in the genre, and as time goes on it becomes more accessible to a wider audience. The game released on Steam last November, and today it was confirmed that Apex Legends will be available on Switch starting March 9. One Respawn developer suggested a fun way to celebrate the new platform release soon after the announcement, and Animal Crossing fans would likely agree.
Nintendo has a history of letting developers run with its popular IP when bringing new games to its hardware. PlatinumGames’ hack-and-slash title Bayonetta got costumes based off Nintendo characters including Princess Peach and Samus Aran when it was first ported to the Wii U. Mojang Studios’ Minecraft has also gotten a Super Mario Mash-Up pack on the Wii U and Switch, letting players explore recreations of Mario locales dressed as the plumber and his friends.
Respawn Entertainment producer Josh Medina took to Twitter after the Apex Legends Switch release date was announced to suggest a similar crossover for the battle royale. He said, “Tom Nook Gibby Skin WHEN,” which appears to be more of a playful joke than any serious confirmation for upcoming content. As one of the original Apex Legends characters, Gibraltar is still seeing play and nerfs from the developer, so if anyone were to get an Animal Crossing skin, he would be a prime candidate.
Regardless of whether or not Nintendo decides to offer up its characters to Respawn, the battle royale will no doubt continue to see new content well after it releases on Switch. In fact, Apex Legends just launched its eighth season of content, which includes a brand-new Legend named Fuse, a destroyed variant of the popular Kings Canyon map, as well as fresh weapons and mechanics for players to try.
The combination of these new additions through the seasonal system and a new platform release next month is likely to keep the game’s community thriving. Already it has proven itself to be something of a juggernaut in the industry, with Apex Legends breaking its concurrent player count on Steam multiple times since November as EA suggests it could be a billion-dollar franchise.
None of this is a guarantee that Apex Legends will receive Nintendo skins in the future, but many fans would no doubt enjoy the crossover potential. Animal Crossing seems a safe bet after the success of New Horizons on Switch, but Super Mario or Legend of Zelda characters could just as easily fit Apex Legends‘ colorful cast. At this point, only time will tell whether something more official is announced.
Apex Legends is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch version releasing March 9.
