The anthropomorphic Pokemon of the Human-Like Egg Group, one of 15 ‘families’ based on breeding compatibility, contains an interesting collection of both powerful and popular Pokemon spanning all eight generations of the series.
Though Egg Groups do not have any firmly defined boundaries, with plenty of odd pairings showing up in the series, members of the Human-Like Egg Group are generally defined by their humanoid appearance and characteristics. With five Mega Evolutions and a strong representation from Psychic- and Fighting-types in particular, this group contains a wide variety of powerful Pokemon that any trainer will be happy to add to their team.
10 Machamp
While it might not be the most versatile, the purely Fighting-type Machamp is occasionally useful in competitive battles and can pack a punch in casual playthroughs, boasting 130 base Attack.
Machamp cannot be found in the wild in any mainline Pokemon game, either evolving from Machoke or acquired from an NPC trade. The work will pay off, however: finding one gives players access to a strong range of physical moves. Poor priority options (why can’t it learn Mach Punch?) and low speed at 55, though, means it often struggles to keep up with other competitive line-ups. Still, its Pokedex entries state that it can effortlessly move mountains and it’s one of the most physically imposing Fighting Pokemon in series history.
9 Electivire
A Generation IV Electric-type, Electivire was tied for highest overall base stats of the Human-Like Egg Group when it was released. Through a combination of speed and versatility, utilizing the ability to learn a lot of different moves, Electivire can serve as a potent offensive threat in many line-ups. Notably, Electivire is a dual threat, with both a high base Attack at 123 and an above-average Special Attack of base 95.
In later generations, the addition of a variety of tools such as Volt Switch, which does damage and swaps the Pokemon that uses it afterwards at the same time, has helped keep Electivire’s arsenal varied. The rare Motor Drive Ability also gives it niche counter-power, offering full immunity to Electric-type attacks and a Speed boost when targeted by one. Super Effective coverage doesn’t count for everything, though, as it often lacks the oomph to take down its targets.
8 Gardevoir
A late addition to the Human-Like Egg group and a big fan favorite, Gardevoir is a powerful Psychic- and Fairy-type Pokemon offering a formidable base Special Attack stat at 115 and a range of useful support moves.
Of course, Mega Gardevoir was an even more powerful battler, but even though the Mega Evolution mechanic was removed in Pokemon Sword & Shield, Gardevoir offers a variety of special attacks and healing potential for many teams. While its versatility is a boon in many cases, though, playing a good Gardevoir is tough, as it just can’t fit every useful option onto its moveset.
7 Hawlucha
A Fighting- and Flying-type Pokemon introduced in Generation VI, Hawlucha offers very swift offense (92 base Attack and top-tier 118 speed) and a tricky match-up for opponents, due to the unique type combination.
Its Unburden ability allows Hawlucha to double its Speed after using an item, outpacing even the fastest Pokémon. Close Combat also allows it to break through defensively-oriented or stall line-ups, and Swords Dance offers sweep potential with the right setup. It does lack in raw Attack from the outset, though, and its high base power STAB moves don’t quite make up the difference without a boost.
6 Toxtricity
A unique type combination and a new Generation VIII addition, Toxtricity excels due to its ability to evade counterplay. Being Poison- and Electric-type allows it to avoid both poisoning and paralysis, and its STAB and coverage gives Toxtricity effectiveness against common Electric-type counters.
Its Special Attack weighs in at a solid 114, and it can be a real menace in its Gigantamax form (which can either poison or paralyze opponents with G-Max Stun Shock. Solid stats will make sure Toxtricity remains a common and powerful match-up in Gen VIII, but its Speed and defenses are rather low and will need to be worked around (base 75 and both base 70 respectively).
5 Lucario
Often mistaken for a Legendary or pseudo-Legendary Pokemon, Lucario’s Mega Evolution has actually been banned from competitive play in some iterations of the game. With its great offense (base 145 Attack and 140 Special Attack), just the right level of Speed (base 112) and its Adaptability Ability (boosting the bonus of STAB), Mega Lucario was an ever-present threat.
A Fighting- and Steel- type, Lucario has some crucial resistances to Rock, Dragon, and Dark attacks, as well as a 115 Special Attack allowing it to contribute offensively, Lucario remains one of the top dogs in the Human-like egg group. A potent mixed attacker with a varied movepool, its base form is just a little sub-par in terms of Speed and defenses, which makes it rather harder to use effectively. Unfortunately, the power it does wield doesn’t always carry over to other games, with Lucario consistently ranked in lower tiers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
4 Infernape
A high-powered offensive threat and overall balanced fighter that debuted as the final evolution of the Fire-type starter in Gen VI, Infernape makes up for below-average defensive capabilities with overwhelming power. With Attack and Special Attack stats of base 104, Infernape can hit hard and remain unpredictable as a mixed attacker.
Though its Fighting and Fire type combination gives it a lot of knockout potential, it also makes Infernape weak to Flying, Psychic, Water, and Ground attacks. Able to sweep whole teams (and offer a lot of utility as a lead) but also liable to be quickly taken down itself, Infernape is a mixed bag that might be perfect for a lot of trainers, depending on their playstyle and strategy.
3 Alakazam
A Gen I pure Psychic-type, Alakazam boasts incredible success across multiple iterations of the series. An almost unequaled Special Attack stat of base 135 and blazing Speed at base 120 gives Alakazam the ability to tear through opponents with one-hit KOs.
Though it has been weakened over the years (by the addition of the Dark-type and so on) after proving a monstrous force in Generation I, Alakazam continues to be a powerhouse. It’s a true glass cannon and must be played very carefully, but the addition of the Isle of Armor Move Tutor’s Expanding Force has made so-called ‘psyspam’ strategies super strong in competitive play. Alakazam is a key member of such teams.
2 Grimmsnarl
Grimmsnarl is a Dark- and Fairy-type introduced in Gen VIII. It has high base Attack stat at 120 and solid Special Attack potential at 95. It is also relatively easy to acquire, with its pre-evolutions Impidimp and Morgrem found rather commonly in several areas of the game.
Its unique combination of types also allows it to take on a wider variety of enemies, being notably strong against Dragon, Ghost, and Psychic Pokémon. Its Prankster ability also offers it increased priority on status moves, giving it the ability to set up defensively against high-damage all-in teams. It’s used more often in a supportive role than an offensive one, which limits its potential a bit, but it can also be an incredible Gigantamax Pokemon with G-Max Snooze’s high power and fifty-fifty chance to make the opponent drowsy. One of the best Pokemon in Sword & Shield competitive play, there’s really only one other member of this Egg Group that tops it.
1 Cinderace
With 116 base Attack stat and 119 speed, Cinderace has become one of Gen VIII’s most powerful picks. Able to contend with other recent metagame favorites like Kartana and Rillaboom, its Speed and ability to dodge traps through the use of U-turn and the Heavy-Duty Boots item makes Cinderace hard to pin down.
Though not without its weaknesses, Gunk Shot or Electro Ball also allows Cinderace to take on traditional counters like the Water- and Fairy-type Tapu Fini. The key to its success has been its Hidden Ability, Libero, which essentially gives it STAB on all of its moves by switching its typing accordingly (as with Greninja’s infamous Protean). A wily fighter, Cinderace currently outclasses all the other Pokemon of the Human-like egg group. Its Gigantamax form is a frequent and terrifying sight.
