In simple terms, the Omega Group is a KGB Special Operations organization that handles a resource known as “Dark Aether.” The goal of the group is to give the USSR a strategic advantage over its Cold War enemies, mainly the United States and NATO. While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War makes subtle references to the original Zombies origin, the Omega Group replaces the Nazi regime and adds a new enemy into the Zombies world.

Founded on August 30th, 1975, the Omega Group was created to identify and weaponize psychotronic phenomena across the world. Originally, their scope covered biocommunication, biological information, and bioenergetics. Founded as a military operation, their goal was to investigate weapon applications from “exoscientific” phenomena across the world. After multiple failures, the Omega Group was written off by the CIA in 1981, until they resurfaced in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as Zombies’ new villain.

As a response to the Strategic Defense Initiative, the KGB chairman assigned a new colonel to restore the Omega Group’s research and projects. After recruiting a few notable scientists, the Omega Group discovered two film reels sealed away in an intelligence vault. The films were recorded at the Projekt Endstation site in Poland, and later led to the weaponization of the phenomena that occurred within the Endstation facility.

This lead to “Operation Undertaker,” where the Omega Group secured the Projekt Endstation facility and began to examine lost German technology. After two months of research and repair, the Omega Group successfully restored the facility’s cyclotron within operation conditions, which would later open the gateway into the Dark Aether. After the gateway opened, a rift between the Dark Aether and the world caused smaller rifts across the globe to appear, making Operation Undertaker a success. This sparks the main conflict within the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies timeline.

While the current leader of the Omega Group remains unknown, many of the doctors, officers, and associated staff have been identified throughout the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies story. One of the highest-ranking doctors in the Omega Group is Doctor Aleksandra Valentina, who appears in Die Maschine as the lead scientist of psychotronic research. It was her decision to reactivate the cyclotron, as she dubbed Operation Undertaker an absolute success.

Below Doctor Valentina is the infamous William Peck, who was a scientific genius previously employed by the U.S. Department of Defense. Serving as the lead scientist of exoscientific phenomena research, William Peck defected to the Omega Group after being passed for promotion, several times, at the Department of Defense. Throughout many Omega Group documents, William Peck goes by the alias “P” for short.

The Omega Group was also fond of hiring military personal, who often served under Captain Sergei Ravenov. Formally a member of FSB’s Alpha Group, Ravenov serves as a loyal Soviet with a reputation for being a ruthless killer when on mission. Serving below him are Lieutenant Orlov and Officer Medvedev, who unsafely reactivated the cyclotron, costing them their lives.

While there are many other named operatives, none have been as vital to Omega Group’s plans as those listed above. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has worked hard to craft a complex timeline, with many personnel serving under Omega Group’s operations.

Out of all the ways that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War could revive the Zombies franchise, this is by far one of the most interesting angles. After Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 ended the Aether timeline, the future of Zombies became uncertain. Fans were not attached to the Chaos timeline, and many wondered what Zombies might look like in future titles.

Once Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War started to reveal its plans for the Zombies franchise, fan excitement grew exponentially. The idea of the zombies outbreak being caused by the Soviets, reviving lost German technology, fits the story perfectly. It creates an interesting idea that the Zombies’ energy is inevitable, and in one way or another, it will always appear and wreak havoc. While it was the Soviets this time, future games could flip the narrative and place the blame on the United States.

As for the Omega Group, they are complex and dedicated enough to serve as interesting long-term villains. From slight appearances throughout the maps, to their connections with the original timeline, this group makes the story much more interesting than simply spawning zombies. The Soviet missions, confidential files, and leaked information bring an unprecedented sense of espionage to the Zombies’ experience, and Black Ops Cold War‘s Zombies easter eggs only deepen the experience.

It is unknown how long the Soviet timeline will run, but many fans are hopeful that the Dark Aether timeline will stretch into future titles. With many unknowns still connecting it to the previous Zombies experiences, fans are ready to plunge back into the easter-egg-filled Zombies game mode. One thing that fans can be sure of is everything in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s Zombies will likely revolve around the actions of the mysterious Omega Group moving forward.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
