Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger made a surprisingly effective comedic pairing in Universal Pictures‘ Twins, in which they played long-lost brothers who were finally reunited as adults, and there have been rumors of a sequel to the movie for almost a decade. In 2012, Universal officially announced that Triplets was in development with DeVito and Schwarzenegger set to return and Eddie Murphy attached to play their long-lost brother. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend to promote his new movie The One and Only Ivan, DeVito provided Twins fans with an update on the long-awaited sequel.
When he was asked if Triplets will ever become a reality, DeVito said, “Yes. Yeah, we’re working on it. It’s been a while, I know, but we’re developing the screenplay right now. That’s going to happen…hopefully.” Back in 2018, Schwarzenegger confirmed that the script for Triplets was complete. It was also reported a few years back that Frozen star Josh Gad was working on the script for a Twins sequel. It’s unclear if the script that DeVito is referring to is a rewrite of either of these scripts or a new stab at the premise altogether.
While the sequel could still fall through, DeVito clearly remains interested in reprising his role as Vincent Benedict and is confident that the movie will eventually get made. Comedy sequels are notoriously difficult to pull off, with movies like Zoolander 2 and Dumb and Dumber To turning out so badly that they tarnished the legacy of the originals. So, the powers that be are likely anxious to get the script right before rolling the cameras. Since the previous drafts are now a few years old, their jokes might have aged out of relevance and need to be updated.
The original Twins movie was a huge box office success – grossing over $200 million worldwide on a relatively modest $18 million budget – and DeVito, Schwarzenegger, and Murphy all remain wildly popular movie stars, so there’s a precedent for this movie to be a hit if it ever manages to get off the ground. Twins director Ivan Reitman was initially attached to co-produce Triplets, but since it went into development hell, it remains to be seen if he’ll be involved when the movie finally goes into production.
In the meantime, DeVito can be heard as the voice of Bob the stray dog in The One and Only Ivan on Disney Plus. The movie was supposed to get a theatrical release, but it instead hit the Mouse House’s streaming platform due to the coronavirus pandemic. Three months after it dropped online, Variety reported that it had become the 27th most-watched streaming exclusive title of 2020. Schwarzenegger will next be seen playing the U.S. President in Kung Fury 2 while Murphy is starring in a different highly-anticipated comedy sequel, Coming 2 America.
