Staying in the backline, conjuring some epic lights, and then being as useful as possible from afar. That is the life of the Intelligence-type hero in DOTA 2 or even other MOBAs. It’s not exactly the most glorious way to play especially when compared to the clutch moves of Agility heroes or the imposing presence of Strength heroes but the best among Intelligence heroes can prove to be a class on their own.
11 Best Local Multiplayer Games for Nintendo Switch
Due to the changing nature of DOTA 2’s meta and balancing, there’s always a rotating recommendation of the best heroes of each type. Staples are always present though and you can’t go wrong with them if you know them well enough. In any case, all you Intelligence hero mains out there ought to take a look at what is considered as the top meta picks.
10 Ezalor/Keeper Of The Light
You can’t find a more hardworking support hero than Ezalor, also known as the Keeper of the Light. This old man has been keeping his own team alive since back in the old days when DOTA was but a modded map for Warcraft III. Anyway, he remains as in-demand as ever.
Ezalor can either provide other heroes with a second wind in the form of mana or hamper the enemy’s movement enough for them to get piled on by the heavy hitters. When not providing support, Ezalor can easily push an unguarded lane.
9 Rubick
Sick of trying to figure out how to counter your enemy’s pick? Then try Rubick, he can’t beat them so he just copied them. That’s pretty much what the Grand Magus is in a nutshell. Rubick, for that matter, is a support hero and needs plenty of protection early game.
His passive and non-ultimate active skills are none too exciting. They’re mostly there to reduce the enemy’s damage output or stun them. However, the ultimate, Spell Steal can be quite a riot when used against a much more powerful enemy hero.
8 Enchantress
Another popular ganker who’s also notorious when left unchecked by the enemy team is Enchantress. She’s a ranged Intelligence hero who also thrives well in the jungle, staying true to her aesthetic theme. Enchantress can easily push on her own thanks to an ability that lets her charm enemy creeps.
Against another hero in a lane, her harassing capabilities are near-unmatched as she can turn attrition potshots into significant damage thanks to Impetus. She’s also resilient enough to stay in her lane or in the jungle thanks to her healing ability.
7 Inai/Void Spirit
Usually, Intelligence heroes are ranged because their HP isn’t that high, and Strength heroes also don’t have that much mana so they’re usually in melee. Still, Void Spirit begs to differ as one of the few rare melee Intelligence heroes in DOTA 2.
As you can imagine, he doesn’t play conventionally like most DOTA 2 heroes. He can function as somewhat of a tank by shifting in and out of existence. You have to make use of these tactically though as they can also double as his damage abilities.
6 Leshrac
Unlike Ezalor, Leshrac believes that the biggest help he can provide to his team is nuking the whole battlefield until the only units left are those with green HP bars. Anyone who has faced a Leshrac player knows this and how he can quickly cause a team wipe for the enemy.
That’s why he’s somewhat of a priority target. However, Leshrac can easily deal with anyone who wants a piece of him thanks to his Nihilism skill after which he can just jump into the fray and Pulse Nova everyone to death. On his own, he’s already capable, but with a team behind him, all it takes is a few abilities to win a clash.
5 Invoker
One of the aforementioned top Intelligence hero staples, Invoker has always been an interesting character to play. He’s also possibly the most complex hero in DOTA 2 because he has in total, 14 abilities, four of which he uses to create the other 10.
Hence it takes patience and aptitude to pilot someone like the Invoker. In the right hands though, Invoker can play nearly every role in the book (minus a pure tank). All 14 abilities ensure that he can be a jack-of-all-trades and still excel in each role he assumes. This hasn’t changed much ever since he was introduced in the original DOTA.
4 Raijin Thunderkeg/Storm Spirit
As one of the smart spiritual brothers of the Void Spirit, Raijin Thunderkeg or Storm Spirit is a bit more clever than Inai. He’s a ranged attacker that excels in ganking and carrying the whole team with his highly synergistic set of abilities.
He can function as a support as well and can buff his teammates which is incredibly useful for chasing fleeing enemies. Not that they need that buff anyway as Raijin himself can chase down the stragglers with his ultimate skill, killing them if he ever bumps into them at lightning speed.
3 Lina
Lina, the Slayer, has gone far as one of the most standard DPS mages in the DOTA franchise. She remains the same pyromaniac who can nuke the battlefield several times over and is thus an in-demand hero in the current meta.
As Lina, you only need to focus on one thing: burning all your enemies as fast as possible. That makes her one of the easiest and most straightforward initiators or gankers to use. The downside is that she’s a pure glass cannon so don’t be picking disadvantaged fights with this one.
2 Batrider
Lina got taken or the match doesn’t allow for duplicates? Don’t worry, there’s always Batrider. He can also fill in for the same role except his tactical mileage is better than the more direct Lina. Batrider likes to butter up his enemies with flammable oily goo before setting them on fire with Flamebreak or Firefly.
His ultimate is just a humiliating experience though since he can easily take out a key damage-dealer or carry in the enemy team by lassoing them. This makes Batrider a strong contender regardless of the lane and he’s currently one of the most powerful heroes in DOTA 2.
1 Puck
Ever wanted to make some high-IQ plays in DOTA 2 with an Intelligence hero that’s easier to use than Invoker? Then Puck will be gentler towards you. He’s one of the most buffed heroes in the most recent update for DOTA 2, making him an exciting pick in the current meta.
In terms of abilities, Puck has the whole package to annoy the enemy team into submission and even survive in case he makes mistakes or something goes wrong. He was already an evasive menace in past updates and with the new buffs, he became even more of a threat.
