Nhut Le, who is best known for playing Inuit Andy on Kroll Show, has been cast as the Judomaster in James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad prequel, Peacemaker. The eight-episode spin-off series began production in mid-January and will debut on HBO Max.
While three different versions of the Judomaster have existed throughout the character’s 60-year history, this is the first time the superhero will receive the live-action treatment. Writer Joe Gill and artist Frank McLaughlin first created the character for Charlton Comics in 1965. The character was then sold to DC Comics and was featured in the Justice League Quarterly. In 2007, a female Judomaster named Sonia Sato was created and introduced as a member of the Birds of Prey and Justice Society.
An excited Nhut Le announced the casting news on Instagram, stating that, “the writing is phenomenal, [it’s] hands down the funniest script I’ve ever read.” Gun wrote the show in quarantine while also working on The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The upcoming series stars John Cena, and will focus on his character, Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. According to the official log-line, the title character is a mercenary who “believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”
Cena’s Peacemaker will first debut this summer in the aforementioned, The Suicide Squad. Gun, who has taken over The Suicide Squad franchise from David Ayer, has stated that the show “is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.”
On a recent episode of the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Cena appeared in full superhero attire on the set of Peacemaker. In the interview, Cena stated that the ultra-violent anti-hero is the exact opposite of a Bruce Wayne and Captain America. Instead of residing in a cave or mansion, Peacemaker lives in a messy one-bedroom apartment.
The cast includes Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), and Chris Conrad (Patriot). Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland are also set to reprise their roles from The Suicide Squad. The spinoff series has yet to receive an HBO Max premiere date.
The Suicide Squad will be available on HBO Max and in theaters starting August 6, 2021.
