With the coronavirus pandemic having gripped the globe for a year now, it seems many are looking for ways to connect with distant friends and family from within quarantine. Microsoft has sought to offer some fun ideas to bridge this gap through its Beyond Generations Initiative, which encourages Xbox players to enjoy video games with older members of their family as a means of keeping in contact.
Today, Microsoft took the idea one step further with the introduction of its ReBoxing Kits scheme, which encourages players to package up their older consoles and send them out to relatives as a means to connect. Visiting the Beyond Generations Initiative tab of the Xbox website offers players instructions on how to box up and send off their pre-owned hardware, including what additional appliances to include and how to factory reset the machine.
Microsoft‘s site offers a downloadable ReBoxing Kit instruction manual that offers all the bits and pieces they need to get involved in the idea, with the kit offering printable tags that can be wrapped around the console’s appliances to instruct relatives what each individual piece does. There’s even a greetings card included that gives players the opportunity to write a personal message they can add to the box. The instructions also recommend how to package the console, telling users to ensure they’ve added plenty of padding and left some pre-owned games for the recipient to play.
Alongside the fun idea, Microsoft has also debuted a commercial highlighting the benefits of getting involved, with the ad showcasing a teenage boy and his grandmother playing a variety of Xbox games together. As the boy teaches his grandmother how to play Minecraft, Forza, and Sea of Thieves, the two share laughs and personal stories, highlighting that gaming is a great space to keep in contact during the pandemic. The ReBoxing Kit concept is sure to entice some Xbox players to hop online with members of family and friends, making for a more social quarantine experience.
It seems likely more players will be willing to part with their Xbox’s due to the recent release of the Series X, which gives them the option to play four generations of Xbox titles. Seeing as players can also hop into games with Xbox One and Xbox One X players as well, there’s all the more reason to send off either console to a family member in need. With Microsoft continuing to work on its Beyond Generations Initiative, it’ll be interesting to see what the company cooks up next.
