American singer-songwriter, actress, and overall super talent Taylor Swift has gotten a total makeover via a piece of dazzling fan art. Instagram user @defendinisart posted a drawing (seen below) they did that depicts Swift as X-Men superhero Dazzler.
Although not as well known as other X-Men, Dazzler has been around in Marvel Comics for almost as long as popular characters such as Wolverine and Storm. Dazzler, whose real name is Alison Blair, made her first appearance in The Uncanny X-Men #130 in 1980. As a mutant, Dazzler has the ability to convert sound vibrations into light and energy beams. In the comics, Dazzler was a singer who used her powers to enhance her performances on stage and “dazzle” her audience. Despite her seemingly superficial and unhelpful abilities, Dazzler is actually a very powerful Mutant and has proven time and time again that her powers are not just for show.
Although Swift has not actually portrayed the character, Dazzler did make her live-action debut in 2019’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix. This was fitting since her comics debut occurred during what’s known as the “Dark Phoenix Saga,” when X-Men member Jean Grey merged with a mysterious cosmic entity called ‘The Phoenix Force,’ causing her to spiral out of control and become more powerful and dangerous than ever before. This storyline was adapted in the 2019 film, in which Dazzler makes a brief cameo performing at a party in the woods near the X-Men school.
In Dark Phoenix, Dazzler is portrayed by actress Halston Sage, but there had long been rumors that Swift would play the disco dancing mutant on screen. After all, it would be an appropriate role for Swift, herself being one of this generation’s biggest pop stars. Dazzler has always been a fan-favorite amongst X-Men readers and considering Swift has arguably one of the largest fan bases on the entire planet, it’s no doubt that their pairing would be a match made in heaven, unlike Jean Grey and The Phoenix Force.
The last acting role Swift had in a film was her performance as Bombalurina in the 2019 abomination that was known as Cats. Even though the film was widely mocked for its creepy effects and utterly nonsensical plot, it did showcase Swift as a talented singer and performer. Maybe if Swift is looking for another big-name Hollywood film to showcase her talents, a performance as Dazzler would give her a better opportunity to shine on screen.
2020 was a big year for Swift. She appeared in multiple documentaries/concert films, including Miss Americana (streaming on Netflix), Taylor Swift: City of Lover Concert (Disney Plus/ Hulu), and Folklore: the Long Pond Studio Sessions (Disney plus).
