Netflix has continued to expand its release of original content every year, which ranges from television series to documentaries and feature-length movies, and 2021 is no different. There are quite a few amazing films coming to the international streaming service this year that should be added to your queue immediately.

The recently released British drama The Dig is only one of a few upcoming releases from Netflix that cross all genres. From horror to rom-com and comedy to sci-fi, there’s something that will appeal to any viewer looking for something new in 2021. Here are a few films to keep an eye on as release dates become available.

10 The Dig

After a limited theatrical release, The Dig began streaming on Netflix in January of 2021. The film is an adaptation of the John Preston novel of the same name from director Simon Stone, starring Carey Milligan, Ralph Fiennes, and Lily James.

The Dig takes place in 1939 and follows a British widow as she hires an archeologist to uncover the significant historical find of the Sutton Hoo treasures. It discusses her struggle to keep the artifacts safe at the dawn of World War II.

9 To All The Boys: Always And Forever

Netflix launched its hit rom-com franchise with 2018’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, which followed Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) and her misadventures in love after her cache of secret love letters were released.

To All The Boys: Always And Forever is the final film in the trilogy that follows 2020’s To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. It will follow Lara as she leaves on a pair of trips after high school that could change everything for her and Peter’s relationship before they both start college.

8 Thunder Force

Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer, and Jason Bateman star in Netflix’s Thunder Force from writer/director Ben Falcone. It follows a pair of best friends who find a way to create superpowers in ordinary people before they are accidentally imbued with powers themselves.

The rookie superheroes take it upon themselves to bring order to a world over-run by supervillains. The superpowered comedy features a stellar cast of characters that are sure to bring a new dimension to the tried-and-true comic book movie.

7 Red Notice

After a high-priced bidding war between studios landed Red Notice at Universal Pictures, delays ultimately led to Netflix releasing the upcoming action-comedy from Dwayne Johnson and director Rawson Marshall Thurber, the team behind Central Intelligence and Skyscraper.

Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds join Johnston in an action-filled comedic heist movie that unites the FBI’s top profiler alongside two of the world’s greatest thieves after a “red notice” from INTERPOL brings them together.

6 Malcolm & Marie

John David Washington and Zendaya starred in and produced the upcoming Malcolm & Marie from director Sam Levinson. It’s a black-and-white romantic drama that will begin streaming on February 5 on Netflix after a limited release.

The film explores a test in a couple’s relationship after they return home from a movie premiere to await the film’s critical reception, which leads to a tense night filled with secrets and revelations that critics have praised for its powerful performances.

5 Blonde

Andrew Dominick wrote and directed the upcoming Blonde, which is a fictionalized biopic about the life of Marilyn Monroe. It’s based on the best-selling Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name, though Netflix has yet to reveal the official release date beyond 2021.

Blonde stars Ana de Armas as Norma Jeane/Marilyn Monroe, alongside a strong cast that includes Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Sara Paxton, and others. The film is sure to appeal to fans of (fictionalized) historical drama.

4 Fear Street

R.L. Stine’s classic collection of young adult horror novels known as Fear Street was developed into a trilogy of movies that were filmed back-to-back with the intention of releasing the first film before the pandemic delayed release dates, allowing Netflix to pick up the trilogy which will be released monthly.

Fear Street follows a group of teenagers in the 90s as they gather together to deal with a series of connected, horrific events that date back generations, forcing them to solve the mystery and save their town.

3 Don’t Look Up

Adam McKay is the writer/director of the upcoming disaster comedy Don’t Look Up, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as a pair of low-level astronomers who embark on a media tour in order to warn the world of an asteroid that is predicted to destroy the Earth.

The film features a blockbuster cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Matthew Perry, Ron Perlman, Chris Evans, and many more! Be sure to keep checking Netflix for the official announcement of the 2021 release date of Don’t Look Up.

2 The Harder They Fall

The recent Netflix teaser that gave viewers the first look at a number of 2021 films led off with James Samuel’s The Harder They Fall, an upcoming Western starring Jonathan Majors, Regina King, Idris Elba, Lakeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz, and Delroy Lindo, with original music from Jay-Z.

The Harder They Fall follows the legendary cowboy, Nat Love, as he reassembles his gang to take out revenge on the man who killed his parents. It’s sure to be a must-watch for fans of the cast and genres.

1 Army Of The Dead

Zack Snyder returns to the world of the undead after his 2004 hit remake of Dawn of the Dead with Netflix’s upcoming Army of the Dead. It stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, and Garret Dillahunt, to name a few.

Army of the Dead follows a highly-trained team of mercenaries as they attempted to rob a Las Vegas casino during a zombie outbreak. The film combines the heist and horror genres together for an action-packed movie that is set to launch a number of projects further expanding Snyder’s zombie-infested world.
