The Nintendo Switch released in 2017, going on to surpass many of its predecessors already in terms of sales, including the massively successful Nintendo 3DS in addition to others like Wii U. In other words, it doesn’t seem the hybrid console is going anywhere anytime soon.
While many rumors have been circulating regarding an impending announcement of an updated (but fan-named) Nintendo Switch Pro, the possibility of it all seems unlikely for now as the company has stated that it wouldn’t be happening anytime soon. That is a bit ambiguous, and there are many rumors that speak to the contrary, though. It’s really just up to Nintendo on how it intends to handle this, whether it’s just an improved basic model or a full-fledged console upgrade. However, if it does happen, many fans would agree that Nintendo Super Switch is a better name than the Switch Pro for a multitude of reasons.
The Pro suffix looks to have been overplayed for quite some time now. The first console manufacturer to do that was Sony, which released the PS4 Pro, an updated version of the already successful PS4. While this is just speculation, many fans believe that the PS5 will also receive an upgraded version in the form of PS5 Pro sometime in the far future.
Originally, this naming scheme was pioneered by Apple in its line of products. The first product to be widely known with this naming scheme was the Macbook. Macbook’s lesser variant came in the form of Macbook Air, which was aimed at most people on a budget and would mostly indulge in lighter tasks. The Macbook Pro is the bigger brother to the Air, aimed at professionals who intend to use the machine for more computationally taxing tasks.
While this is a simple naming scheme for PS4 Pro has worked for Sony, many fans would agree that the word Pro or Professional doesn’t really translate well into the realm of gaming. Not everything has to be called “Pro” to showcase it as an improved production. Xbox, for example, uses letters such as the Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. To help it stand out, Nintendo would probably want to following naming conventions of it own, such as “Super.” This sort of identification is obvious in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, whether intentional or not, but it also has a much longer history.
Nintendo already has a history of naming its superior products with the prefix, “Super.” The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, abbreviated as SNES, was the successor to the massively successful debut console, the Nintendo Entertainment System, abbreviated as NES. This ultimately made it easy to understand the naming scheme, especially at a time when most people weren’t aware of the intricacies of gaming consoles and the concept of generations.
The console naming scheme also worked well with most of the premier franchises that Nintendo exclusively offered on its own systems. Games such as Super Mario Bros. could easily be traced down to the console as both of them sounded strikingly similar, which again would have made the shopping experience easier for the ones who didn’t know much about gaming. This general friendliness goes hand-in-hand with its image as the “family” gaming company, and that lends the “Super” moniker a strong, but “casual” vibe.
The console may still a long way off—that is, if it does come out. Many fans believe that this is primarily due to Nintendo already having enough power with the console to create the best experiences on the Switch that it wants to offer, and its incredibly success means that no one or nothing is forcing its hand. While these is just speculation, a Super Switch is sure to capture the attention of many more gamers than something along the lines of Switch Pro.
