2019’s Control is a third-person action-adventure from Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games with a unique premise. The game is set in the Oldest House, headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control, an agency dedicated to the study and containment of phenomena that violate the laws of reality. In Control, players delve deep into the FBC’s secrets, finding terrifying monsters and mind-bending puzzles alike.
Nothing in the Oldest House is simple, and players may spend some time on Control‘s puzzle sections. One of the most challenging is during the Old Boys Club mission, in which players need to fix the HRA Machine using punch cards.
Once players have reached the HRA Lab, having solved the cube puzzle in the previous section, they’ll be tasked with restoring the HRA machine. To do this, first, they’ll need to collect five of the game’s punch cards, which are scattered around the lab. Here’s where to find them:
- Beside the doorway to the staircase that leads to the upper level.
- Sitting on a desk on the ground floor, to the left when entering the lab.
- On the corner of the brown table on the ground floor.
- On the right-hand side of the ground floor, on a white box.
- Upstairs attached to the wall, next to the window which overlooks the lab.
Once Jessie, Control‘s protagonist, has acquired the five punch cards, she’ll now need to slot them into the terminals in the correct order.
To work out the sequence of the punch card terminals in Control‘s HRA Lab Level, players will need to carefully study the whiteboards scattered around the room. However, those players who’d prefer to get a direct solution should skip ahead to the final paragraph of the guide. There are three whiteboards, each of which gives a third of the solution. While most of the answers are fairly clear once all three whiteboards have been studied, there is one more twist to the puzzle. One of the whiteboards has “Changing Variables” written on it, which indicates that players should swap the two symbols joined with the arrow to make the correct solution.
While the whiteboards can be as confusing as Control‘s monsters, they should reveal that the sequence of punch cards is as follows when using the image above:
- A plugs into Terminal 1.
- B plugs into Terminal 5.
- C plugs into Terminal 2.
- D plugs into Terminal 4.
- E plugs into Terminal 3.
Once the five punch cards have been entered, the HRA machine should restart. As HRA kits are the only things that protect humans from the resonance of the Hiss, Control’s primary antagonist, this is pretty essential to Jesse turning the tide.
Control is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
