While Nintendo has cycled through a variety of physical game formats over the years, from bulky NES cartridges to compact GameCube disks, they decided to return to cartridge format similar to the Nintendo DS with the release of the Switch back in 2017. And while fans initially latched onto the cartridges’ bitter taste, they also proved to be very easy to store, and just as easy to lose.
Most of the conversation around Switch cartridges right now tends to be around whether they’ll change in any way with the release of the highly-rumored Switch Pro/Super Switch model. However, one Nintendo fan has taken it upon themselves to come up with an incredibly ingenious Mario-themed design for a Switch cartridge case.
Over on Reddit, user whopperlover17 posted a video featuring 2 different versions of a Nintendo Switch game case in the shape of the iconic green pipes found in practically every Super Mario game. The cases appear to be 3D-printed, and have attracted a lot of attention from fans either inquiring about the designs’ files or buying their own from the Reddit user.
The first cartridge case shown by whopperlover17 features a twistable child-lock which allows them to remove the top of the pipe-shaped case to reveal 2 drawers which seem to hold around 9 cartridges each. The second case features a smaller pipe capable of holding 14 Switch cartridges, whopperlover17 notes. The Reddit user also confirmed that amiibo can fit in the top of the 1st case. These cartridge case designs have Nintendo fans everywhere cracking jokes about the Japanese video game company hitting the user with a copyright infringement claim, as it has become known to do for similar fan projects.
Regardless, these clever Switch game cases would fit in perfectly with any fan’s Nintendo collection of merchandise, or simply as a neat desk decoration. Not to mention the fan-made cases are even more fitting given that celebrations for Super Mario Bros.‘s 35th anniversary have continued well into 2021. It will be interesting to see if anything similar officially releases for the Nintendo Switch in the future.
