Star Trek Online Players Celebrate Actor Christopher Plummer

Many remember him as The Sound of Music‘s stern patriarch with a heart of gold, Captain Von Trapp, or perhaps as the ingenious murder-mystery author Harlan Thrombey in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, but plenty of Trekkies will fondly recall the late Christopher Plummer as the Shakespeare-quoting Klingon general Chang from Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country. They showed their appreciation this weekend by coming together in Star Trek Online to honor the man for his work and his life.

Plummer, who sadly passed away recently at the age of 91, reprised his role as General Chang in a handful of Star Trek video games alongside his big-screen experience, joining the cast of 1997’s Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and 2000’s Star Trek: Klingon Academy. To pay their respects, players in Cryptic Studios’ deep-space MMO Star Trek Online are gathering at the various in-game memorial plaques, which pay tribute to those who worked on the TV series and movies.

Players took to Twitter and Reddit to share screenshots of their compatriots raising torches at the memorials on Klingon home world Qo’noS and Deep Space Nine, as well as fan-created characters in the image of Plummer’s role. Meanwhile, the official Star Trek Online Twitter account offered its own tribute to the actor, thanking him for the ‘gravitas and respect’ that he brought to the role, and friends and co-stars William Shatner and George Takei offered their own tributes. These gestures are surely emblematic of the high esteem in which so many hold the man – though it’s unlikely that the Plummer estate has the same intentions for the actor’s posthumous career as Star Trek: The Original Series actor James Doohan.

The in-game tribute to Plummer comes, appropriately enough, towards the end of Star Trek Online‘s “Year of Klingon” event, which began last May and enjoyed a sizeable content update in October. With the new content being influenced by modern shows like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery, perhaps it’s possible that we’ll see an official in-game tribute to the cultured Klingon general in the near future.

Star Trek Online is available now on PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One.
