Tom Holland Shuts Down Rumors Of Multiple Spider-Men In Next Movie

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has seemingly squashed rumors that there will be other spider-men in the upcoming MCU film. In an interview with Esquire, Holland goes in-depth about his career and discusses his new role as a drug-addicted army vet turned bank robber in the upcoming Apple TV+ original film Cherry, which is helmed by Avengers: Endgame directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo.

Holland seems to have cultivated an excellent working relationship with the Russo’s. They’ve given him high praise, saying that they would love to work with him for the rest of their careers and that he’s the hardest working actor they’ve ever been around. Holland was originally cast in the role of Peter Parker/ Spider-Man at the age of 19, beating out more than a thousand other competitors, including heartthrob Timothee Chalamet. He made his first appearance as the character in Captain America: Civil War, the movie that started his working relationship with the Russo Brothers.

The untitled third standalone MCU Spider-Man film has been the subject of multiple casting rumors, including the possibility of previous Spidey actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their roles. Fans and entertainment outlets alike have speculated that this could mean that the third film is be setting up a live-action multiverse, something seen throughout the comics and in the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. However, Holland appears to squash these rumors during his interview after being asked about whether or not Maguire or Garfield will appear in the film, emphatically stating: “No, no, they will not be appearing in this film.” So it would appear that, at least to Holland’s knowledge, audiences will not be seeing Maguire or Garfield reprise their roles.

That being said, Holland does admit in the interview that Marvel has a tendency to hide key information from him and the other actors. Marvel is notoriously tight-lipped about their upcoming films, hoping to make sure rumors like this stay unconfirmed and unspoiled, going as far as not telling actors the context of the scenes they’re in.

In the interview, Holland gives the example of Tony Stark’s funeral in Avengers: Endgame, for which the actor claims he was convinced they were filming a wedding scene at the time. He even admits that after eight weeks of shooting the current Spider-Man film, he still has no idea what the film is really about.

So, who knows? Is Holland telling the truth? Does he even know who else is in the movie? Maybe Marvel has gotten so good at hiding things from its actors that Holland doesn’t even know that he’s sharing the screen with previous Spider-Man actors. Although that seems unlikely, we’ll just have to wait and see until the next movie comes out.

The currently untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel is scheduled for release on December 17th, 2021.
