‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Star Details On Set Abuse From Joss Whedon

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel star Charisma Carpenter took to her Twitter page today, releasing a two-part statement that accuses the series creator and director Joss Whedon of harassment and abuse. She is not the first person to come publicly with accusations of unprofessional and hostile behavior, and says that her statement is in direct support of others who have come forward with similar experiences.

The majority of Carpenter’s statement details verbally aggressive and abusive behavior she allegedly went through at the hands of Whedon, including body shaming, name-calling, and mocking her religious beliefs. She details a situation where he mistreated her while she was pregnant, saying “(Whedon) intentionally refused multiple calls from my agents making it impossible to connect with him to tell him the news that I was pregnant. Finally, once Joss was apprised of the situation, he called a meeting with me. In that closed-door meeting, he asked me if I was “going to keep it”… At six months pregnant, I was asked to report to work at 1:00 AM after my doctor recommended shortening my work hours… It was clear to me the 1:00 AM call was retaliatory.” Carpenter also claims she was fired once she gave birth.

In the caption of her post, Carpenter wrote the hashtag #IStandWithRayFisher. This refers to Justice League actor Ray Fisher’s previous allegations against Whedon’s behavior. Whedon was brought onto Justice League following Zack Snyder’s departure and was heavily involved in editing and reshoots.

On top of notoriously making a different movie to what Snyder had originally intended, Fisher, who plays Cyborg in the film, alleges that Whedon was verbally abusive, unprofessional, and hostile on the set during the reshoots. His allegations led WarnerMedia to conduct an internal investigation, which Carpenter states she was also involved in, and Fisher subsequently left the DCEU and was fired from an appearance in The Flash.

While Whedon is yet to publicly respond to Carpenter’s statement specifically, he has denied all allegations of inappropriate behavior and the WarnerMedia investigation did not find him guilty of anything Fisher said occurred. Fisher hasn’t changed his stance, continuing to seek public apologies from WarnerMedia and the filmmakers, and it’s too early whether Carpenter’s story will bring this situation back into the spotlight or if it will just fizzle out.
