Fans of Resident Evil 2 will remember Claire Redfield’s mission in Raccoon City – finding her brother, Chris Redfield. Unfortunately, Claire’s mission will end with her escaping a city ravaged by a zombie apocalypse. Unbeknownst to her, Chris Redfield himself experienced Umbrella Corporation’s horror firsthand in the original Resident Evil game.
In Capcom‘s title, Chris Redfield and counter-terror specialist Jill Valentine investigate the Spencer Estate in the Arklay Mountains alongside the special forces team STARS. However, Chris and Jill end up uncovering the darker secrets of Umbrella Corporation and their research into bioterror. Unfortunately for Chris, his experience here will plunge him into the deep world of bioterrorism and bioweapons. However, what else is Chris Redfield hiding behind his serious demeanor?
10 Originally The Tough Guy
Fans would remember that the first Resident Evil game served as Capcom’s first foray into survival horror. As such, the ideas of “fighting zombies” still felt new to them – and the original draft does demonstrate this. In the original draft of the game, Chris and three other protagonists (including a Jill Morrison) would fight zombies with high-tech weaponry and cybernetics. However, Chris’s final draft would have him (and Jill now-Valentine) sport a more realistic military theme.
Moreover, the final draft for Chris would have him more muscular and arm him with a combat knife. This design choice aimed to make him look more like a “tough guy” contrary to Jill’s more feminine frame.
9 Muscles, Realism Became The Problem
Unlike other protagonists, Chris actually received extensive redesign efforts throughout his other appearances. After his first appearance in Resident Evil, Capcom made him considerably more muscular by Resident Evil 5. This design choice seemed to coincide with the more action-horror approach to the game, albeit with a bit of weirdness on the part of gameplay (cue punching boulders).
However, the team decided to have a more realistic approach by the time they approached Resident Evil 7. By then, Capcom would use the more realistic photo-scan technology to create characters instead of manually creating them by hand. In turn, Chris had a leaner frame and opted to make his features more “true-to-life.” Interestingly, in Resident Evil Village, Chris would receive features that would make him similar to his Resident Evil 6 appearance.
8 Match Made In Heaven
Eagle-eyed fans might notice some tiny references in the early Resident Evil games. In particular, the Redfield siblings seem to have an odd connection with music, as demonstrated by their outfits. Claire Redfield, for instance, has the “Made in Heaven” text placed as a detail behind her vest in Resident Evil 2. Fans might remember that “Made in Heaven” serves as one of the more popular songs of the band Queen.
However, Chris also has “Made in Heaven” printed on one of his jackets. For instance, Chris’s alternate outfit in Resident Evil has the same print. Players can also find the same jacket in Chris’s desk in Raccoon City’s STARS office. Moreover, players can see Chris wear the same jacket during the epilogue of Resident Evil 3.
7 Green Is For Chris
Regardless of his appearance and redesign, Chris always had a knack for green clothes. This design choice seemed to contrast Jill’s leaning to blue. Contrary to the red-blue pairing of Claire and Leon that alternated between civilian and more tactical clothing, both Chris and Jill had predominantly military clothing. In turn, the green-blue contrast of the two characters reflected either in the clothes they wore or the military gear they sported.
For instance, Chris’s green tones came in the form of his camo-inspired combat vests, khaki pants, or even green combat pants. Moreover, in civilian clothes, Chris often had a green shirt or an olive top to pair with his other clothes.
6 At Some Point Quit The Military
As with the other characters, Chris’s past remains shrouded in mystery. However, it’s known that Chris and Claire lost their parents at a young age and only had each other. It’s thanks to Chris’s training that Claire has a rudimentary knowledge of firearms and close-quarters combat. In turn, Chris received his own training as part of the United States Air Force, where he got his combat training and formed a bond with Barry Burton.
Unfortunately, Chris had strong convictions that always put him in conflict with his superiors. It’s unknown whether he resigned or even got discharged. However, Chris received enough training to win marksmanship contests and even excel in hand-to-hand combat. Moreover, it’s his training that got STARS to recruit him, which led Chris to participate in the investigation in Spencer Estate in the first place.
5 Created An Anti-BOW Team
After Chris and Jill survived the Mansion Incident and their respective struggles prior to Umbrella’s fall, the pair eventually created the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. Thanks to the BSAA, Chris, and Jill took the battle against bioterror to other corporations and groups interested in bioweapons development in the black market.
It’s also thanks to the BSAA that the world had a more direct ally against bioweapons. Despite their limited funding and resources at the time, the BSAA had a remarkable number of victories in bioterror outbreaks in various regions of the world.
4 Combat Preparation For Wesker
Interestingly, fans might argue regarding Chris’s muscle development for his appearances in Resident Evil 5 and 6, to the point of disbelief against his physical abilities. However, it seems Chris had larger muscle mass to show his preparation for the more superhuman Albert Wesker, who himself has remarkable physiology due to various experiments.
Fans might remember that Chris and Jill’s last mission in the Spencer Mansion resulted in a deadly encounter with Wesker. Moreover, Jill’s sacrifice to “end” Wesker may have motivated Chris to train further to combat bioterror threats. Thankfully, his training paid off as his improved battle skills proved useful in saving Jill from Wesker’s control, which involved Chris having to fight her in a more superhuman state.
3 Muscle Means Health, Tough Means Combat
Across his appearances in the games, Capcom always had Chris become tougher and more fit for combat. In the original Resident Evil, Chris can hold fewer items but have better health than Jill. Moreover, in Resident Evil 5, his melee attacks deal more damage and has a large machete as a melee weapon. In The Mercenaries 3D, Chris has standard movement speed but can tank and recover more damage. Moreover, Chris’s scenario in Resident Evil 6 had a more action-horror setup compared to the others.
In his other appearances, Chris either functioned as a rare or unlockable character or with more intricate melee moves compared to the other characters. Interestingly, Chris’s expanded arsenal does help him become a more effective combatant against normal zombies and scarier bioweapons.
2 A Little Thing With Names
Fans who play as Chris amongst his many entries might think whether “Chris” serves as his full name. After all, most people named “Chris” likely have it as a nickname for a fuller “Christopher.” Interestingly, Chris Redfield experienced quite a similar dilemma. For instance, the American-produced “Viral Campaign” for Resident Evil 5 states that Chris is in fact a “Christopher.” Moreover, Lucas Baker also referred to Chris as “Christopher” in the “Not A Hero DLC” of Resident Evil 7 where Chris had to deal with a new bioweapon.
However, in the original Japanese script for the same DLC, Lucas only calls Chris “Chris.” In fact, save for the aforementioned circumstances, all identification materials refer to Chris as “Chris” throughout the games.
1 To Smoke, Or Not To Smoke
Small habits and mannerisms that protagonists do often help characterize their characters. Much remains the same in Resident Evil – especially for protagonists that appear across multiple games like Chris. Fans who watched the first Resident Evil film will remember that their iteration of Chris is actually a smoker. This is evidenced by him smoking in both the film’s introduction and ending sequences.
However, fans can’t see any sign of Chris smoking anywhere throughout the games. As a result, fans can conclude that Chris being a smoker is simply the film’s way of characterizing their version of the protagonist. However, Chris’s first appearance in Resident Evil 6 does come with cigarette butts near his seat in a bar.
