NBC has officially announced that the hit police sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be coming to an end after season 8. The show was originally canceled in 2018 after a five-season run on Fox, only to be revived later that year at its new home on NBC. Created by Michael Schur and Dan Goor, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a half-hour sitcom that focuses on the comedic lives of several NYPD detectives who work at a fictional police precinct in Brooklyn.
The show has been consistently popular amongst fans and critics alike, earning many nominations and awards during its tenure. In 2014, Brooklyn Nine-Nine won the Golden Globe Award for best comedy series, as well as Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Andy Sandberg’s portrayal of man-child detective Jake Peralta. The sitcom also stars Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller. Braugher has also received four Emmy nominations for his role as the stern Police Precinct Captain, Raymond Holt.
Despite its overwhelming popularity, the show has taken some heat recently for its light-hearted and comedic portrayal of the police. In the wake of protests after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, some criticized the sitcom for its inability to address controversial subjects such as police brutality and systemic racism within law enforcement. Like many shows that are focused on police officers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is seen by some as another example of “Copaganda,” a term used to refer to a show or movie that attempts to reduce any negative ideas about policing. As a result, actors Terry Crews and Andy Samberg have both confirmed that the show will now address many of these issues in the upcoming final season. In reaction to the criticism, the cast and crew also donated $100,000 to the National Bail Fund Network in June of last year.
It’s unclear as to whether these criticisms have anything to do with the show finally coming to an end. It may simply be due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, which, like many movie and tv productions, has caused delays for the sitcom. The show was originally renewed for an eighth season in 2019, but production was delayed due to the pandemic.
Regardless of the reasons why the series is ending, executive producer Dan Goor seems content with the decision. “I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve,” Goor said in a statement. “Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story, and our viewers.”
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 will consist of 10 episodes and premieres on a yet-to-be-determined date during the 2021-2022 season.
