Indie Hit Spiritfarer Adding New Spirits and More in 2021

2020 saw its fair share of critically-acclaimed video game releases, ranging from big budget triple-A titles to smaller indie hits. One of the best indie games of 2020 was Spiritfarer from Thunder Lotus Games, which earned mostly positive reviews and was nominated for multiple awards at The Game Awards 2020. Luckily for fans of the game, Thunder Lotus has announced plans to release new Spiritfarer content throughout 2021.

The Spiritfarer DLC has been detailed through a new content roadmap that explains what fans can expect. The first update will hit spring 2021, and it will add the new spirit Lily to the game. Lily is the younger sister of Spiritfarer protagonist Stella and takes the form of a swarm of butterflies. Lily is unique in that she is the only spirit in the game that will be active at night time. She will come with some new story content for Stella as well, though details on what exactly that entails have yet to be revealed at the time of this writing.

Spiritfarer activities like fishing will be improved with the spring update as well, as Thunder Lotus is adding co-op fishing to the mix alongside a brand new UI for co-op players. Meanwhile, Spiritfarer fans can then look forward to the summer update, which will be adding a new bird character named Beverly that players will meet in Oxbury. This update will also adding a new station that can be built on the ship called the Archive Room, where players will be able to inspect new collectibles like Acetate Sheets. Other quality of live improvements will be coming as well, though Thunder Lotus is keeping them secret for now.

And finally, Spiritfarer fans can look forward to the fall update, which sounds like it may be the most substantial yet. Coming about one year since Spiritfarer made its debut, the fall 2021 update will add two new spirits, Jackie the caretaker and Daria the patient, who appear to be a hyena and a bat, respectively. This update will also add a new island to Spiritfarer‘s map for players to explore, along with new boat buildings to build, resources to collect, and an event to complete.

Spiritfarer was praised for its storytelling, emotional impact, and addictive gameplay loop, and it sounds like this content will simply be adding more of that to the experience. More details on Spiritfarer‘s DLC should come to light the closer we get to the Lily update in spring 2021.

Spiritfarer is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
