While it’s easy to assume that Okami has been completely forgotten, the series’ legacy does continue to survive to this day. Capcom may not be making a new sequel any time soon, but the company clearly remembers it and is aware of its popularity, with main protagonist Amaterasu being added to the crossover card game Teppen. It also licenses it out so new merchandise can be made, like this recently announced Nendoroid figure of Shiranui.
The figure is obviously still in development and GoodSmile hasn’t provided anything resembling a release window, but all that remains is for it to be colored in. And judging by the responses, fans are excited to pre-order it.
For non-Okami fans who may be wondering why GoodSmile appears to have just made a second Amaterasu figure, this technically isn’t the same character. Shiranui is actually a past incarnation of Amaterasu who died before the events of the game after being poisoned by the fiendish Orochi. Thanks to some time-travel shenanigans, Amaterasu later teamed up with Shiranui to assist them with the battle against Orochi, with Shiranui later returning the favor in present day against the twin demons Lechku and Nechku. They also made an appearance in the sequel, Okamiden, in order to assist Amaterasu’s son, Chibiterasu.
Fans aren’t the only ones eager for another Okami title. Last year, Ikumi Nakamura, a former developer for the game, stated that she had an idea for a sequel that she wanted to pitch to Capcom. While such a pitch would no doubt be welcomed by fans, it would ultimately require Capcom to give it the green light.
Okami is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
