At E3 2019, publisher Tripwire Interactive and developer Torn Banner Studios announced the development of Chivalry 2, the sequel to Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. The multiplayer hack-and-slash games are inspired by the epic medieval battle scenes of Hollywood movies, pitting dozens of players against one another on chaotic, brutal, and often gory battlefields.
Originally slated as a PlayStation 5 launch title, Torn Banner Studios announced in August 2020 that Chivalry 2 would be delayed for an unspecified period of time. The postponed release date would give the developers the time necessary to fully realize their vision and make Chivalry 2 the game they wanted it to be. It would also allow the title to release simultaneously on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5, with cross-generation play enabled.
On February 11, Torn Banner Studios announced that Chivalry 2 will officially launch on June 8, 2021. The developers are currently running a closed alpha of the game in Europe and North America, and interested players can sign up to be selected by lottery for an invitation. When the game launches in June, it will be available on PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive. Those who pre-order the PC version of the game will gain guaranteed access to the Chivalry 2 closed beta, which is scheduled to run from March 26-29.
While the delayed release of Chivalry 2 may have been disappointing for players eager to jump into some epic battlefield brawls, Torn Banner Studios has stated that the extended development time will allow them to launch the game with more content than originally promised. There will be additional maps and other game features, as well as several quality of life improvements that had previously been planned for a post-launch release. Players excited to jump onto a horse and ride into battle will still have to wait until after launch, however.
Chivalry 2 is set in a fictional medieval-style universe, taking place 20 years after the events of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. Players will be able to live out their fantasy of being a knight with a sword or a brigand out for blood and loot. Massive 64-player battlefields recreate that cinematic feel, as catapults slam into the ground, fighters storm besieged castles, and flaming arrows fly through the sky. Once horses join the fray, there will be cavalry charges and players will be able to wreak havoc from horseback.
The battle system of the game has been revamped, introducing new combat moves and animations, as well as a faster, more natural movement flow. And the battlefield isn’t limited to fighting; interactive objects litter the map, from chickens to pitchforks to tomatoes. Additionally, character customization and voice lines have been expanded, allowing players to dive deeper into roleplaying.
Chivalry 2 will release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on June 8, 2021.
