On the game’s 5th anniversary, developer Campo Santo thanked everyone for playing Firewatch over the years but revealed that there’s a hidden arcade mode within the game that barely anyone knew about.
Firewatch released 5 years ago, immediately becoming a big name in the indie gaming community and within Let’s Play YouTubers such as Markiplier. It received positive reviews among gamers and critics and became an inspiration for other walking simulator games to come. After winning several awards and selling over a million copies, Firewatch would be released for Nintendo Switch in 2018. Some players may have discovered it back when the Switch version of Firewatch released, but otherwise, the hidden arcade mode has flown under the radar.
Inspired by retro 90s platformers, players can find a game cartridge inside a supply cache, but to access it, players will need to input the code “1964.” This is a reference to the game cartridge, an N64-style cartridge, that will allow players to access Firewatch‘s hidden arcade mode.
After finding the cartridge of a game called Forrest 64, players will then have to insert it into a “console.” It’s not a Nintendo 64, sadly; instead, players can find a small, strange statue of Forrest 64‘s protagonist, Forrest Byrnes. Select the “put it back” prompt to access the hidden platformer in Firewatch.
In the mini-game, Firewatch players will be able to run around the same forests in Forrest 64, but now, in time challenges divided into 3 modes: a collectathon, destroying red rockets, and a race with a UFO.
Firewatch is available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
