David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the brains behind HBO’s Game of Thrones, have teamed up with actor Hugh Jackman to work on a new project with Netflix. The team is developing a series adaptation of Richard Powers’ Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Overstory. They will be joined by Powers himself, who serves in a co-executive producer capacity.
No details have been revealed about casting or a release date at the moment. However, there is a possibility that Jackman might have an acting role in the series, too, Deadline reported. While the search for a director is on, the pilot script has already been written by Richard Robbins, who previously worked on 12 Monkeys.
The Overstory was originally published in 2018 and it is Roberts’ twelfth novel. A work of environmental fiction, the story focuses on a group of very different individuals and how their lives become intertwined with nature. Their experiences and relationship with a distinct set of trees result in a realization about the state of the world’s forests, which brings them together to address environmental destruction. The book received a lot of praise, and the Pulitzer committee refers to it as “an ingeniously structured narrative.”
The Netflix adaptation of the book will contribute towards Benioff and Weiss’ multi-year film and TV deal with the streaming platform. In 2019, the duo signed a deal with Netflix worth around $200 million. This meant that their collaboration with HBO came to an end after the two worked with the television network to produce Game of Thrones, a show that went on to become a cultural phenomenon. The pair had decided to adapt George R. R. Martin’s books in 2006 and the first episode of the show aired in 2011 on HBO. The series concluded in 2019, after eight seasons, and earned several awards during its run.
Apart from The Overstory, Benioff and Weiss are already working on three other Netflix projects. They are currently writing and will be executive producing the Netflix adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, based on a trilogy of bestselling sci-fi Chinese novels with a focus on alien invasion written by author Liu Cixin. They are also executive producers on The Chair, a Netflix dramedy starring Sandra Oh. Another project, Metal Lords, is being produced by Benioff and written by Weiss.
