Gina Carano Might Have Starred In A Cara Dune Spinoff Before Being Fired

Following the recent news that Gina Carano has finally been fired from The Mandalorian after months of problematic behavior, many fans were left wondering what it means for the future of the series. Well, it turns out that the immensely popular Disney Plus show may not be the only project affected by the sudden change in personnel.

While the existence of several new Star Wars spinoff shows isn’t exactly news after several were announced at once at a Disney event in December, it’s possible one project was held back due to the same issues that just came to a climax with Carano. Reports suggest that Disney executives purposefully refrained from announcing a separate new show starring Carano as her Mandalorian character Cara Dune, possibly because they were already discussing options on how to deal with her behavior.

However, it’s also possible that the project in question was actually Rangers of the New Republic, which was indeed announced during the event. The idea is that Carano was originally set to star as the lead (or one of the leads) in the series, but plans had begun to change before Disney could make any meaningful adjustments to the announcement. No real details have been given about the show itself, which could lend credence to this theory, as perhaps Disney had originally planned to at least give a short synopsis.

Gina Carano had originally begun to draw attention back in September, when she made several posts mocking Twitter users who put pronouns in their bios. For reference, the practice itself is at least generally meant as a show of support for the transgender community (or simply for transgender, nonbinary, etc. people to state the pronouns they use). Many condemned Carano’s posts as transphobic, to the point where The Mandalorian co-star Pedro Pascal (who has been enjoying some more positive casting news of his own) apparently attempted to help teach her to be more sensitive about the subject. But things slowly snowballed from there until she has now just recently been fired after a deleted Instagram post compared being conservative to the struggles of Jewish people during the Holocaust.

It’s unclear how much of an overarching connected universe Disney had planned for all the new shows they announced, and whether or not this new info will change any of that. But given the overwhelming popularity of The Mandalorian as well as the generally high quality of the show, hopefully the minds behind it all will be able to crank out something equally entertaining even with the changes.

Some fans are disappointed to see Gina Carano leave the show, as they had grown to enjoy her character. So it’s still up in the air how things will go from here. Maybe the role of Cara Dune will go to another actress? Or perhaps she will simply be unceremoniously absent from future episodes. To be fair, as proven by Black Panther, sometimes recasting isn’t necessarily the right call. No telling what will happen, but for what it’s worth, Lucy Lawless might be available.
