Everybody enjoys a lovable rogue. In The Elder Scrolls Online, however, rogues can also be deadly. Unlike thieves, pure rogues aren’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with the best of them. Through guile, subterfuge, and a little magic, they’re able to pack quite an unexpected punch.
Any race can be a rogue, but some are more predisposed to the role than others. Playing as a pure rogue in the early stages of the game can be intimidating, especially for new players. Knowing which races make the best rogues helps alleviate some of the early-game frustration. With the right preparation, playing this archetype can be immensely satisfying.
6 Breton
Bretons typically make excellent mages. Nevertheless, it’s worth pointing out that nothing bars them from archetypes that rely on a more stealthy approach. They possess the necessary magical capabilities that allows them to play to their strengths as a rogue.
The Opportunist Racial Passive grants a bonus to experience when utilizing light armor, which can come in handy if things go sour. Gift of Magnus increases maximum Magicka so that more powerful spells can be cast and maintained. Spell Resistance makes the Breton more durable against other magic-users. Lastly, Magicka Mastery reduces the Magicka cost of the Breton’s abilities. The key is to play to the Breton’s strengths at all cost. Use his mastery of the arcane arts to get in close before dispatching the enemy.
5 Imperial
Imperials are versatile enough to make it as any pure archetype. Although it may seem odd at first, the Imperial’s racial abilities are well-rounded enough to make the rogue playthrough viable. Rather than using magic like the Breton, an Imperial can always fall back on his keen aptitude for traditional combat.
The Imperial can be maneuverable, which is important for a rogue. Imperial Mettle grants an increase to maximum Stamina. That can come in handy if a bow is chosen as a secondary weapon. The Tough Skill bestows an increase to maximum Health. If a combat encounter starts to go downhill that extra infusion of Health can mean the difference between life and death.
4 Redguard
The Redguard doubles-down on the mobility aspect of being a rogue. Even if an enemy survives the initial sneak attack, Redguards have the capacity to stay in the fight and chip away the opponent’s health bar. A rogue needs to avoid being overwhelmed and the Redguard is fully suited for that task.
Martial Training and Conditioning serves as a good combo as far as racial abilities are concerned. The former reduces the cost of weapon abilities while the latter increases maximum Stamina. An effective series of quick attacks can be achieved with such a combination. Finally, Adrenaline Rush restores even more Stamina when direct damage is inflicted. In cases where stealth fails a Redguard can still manage to finish the fight.
3 Wood Elf
Wood Elves are natural hunters and quite fleet of foot. Thus, utilizing a more stealthy approach isn’t a huge stretch for them. In fact, instead of using a dagger (which is often a rogue’s best friend), a bow can be substituted in its place. A Wood Elf doesn’t necessarily need to get up close to dispatch all his enemies. Sniping from a safe distance is definitely a useful strategy too.
The Acrobat Skill encourages the use of a bow by granting a bonus to experience gain. A Bosmer can get the drop on his enemies with help from the Hunter’s Eye Skill, which increases the player’s detection radius. This is doubly important for a rogue, who often has to plan out his next move before striking.
2 Dark Elf
Dark Elves can dish out a lot of damage no matter the archetype. As rogues they can be quite deadly if the proper weapons are placed in their hands. Unlike some other races, Dark Elves possess a natural durability to them, at least in the case of fire. They can stay in a fight without resorting to running away if things go badly.
The Ashlander Skill increases the experience gain whilst dual-wielding weapons. For a stealthy rogue a dagger in each hand isn’t a bad option by any stretch. Ashlander is complemented nicely with Ruination, which increases weapon and spell damage. An enemy can be cut to ribbons in no time at all.
1 Khajiit
Khajiit, without a doubt, make for natural rogues. Their Racial Passives make them ideal candidates right out of the gate. Whereas the other races have to work and refine their skills from the beginning, the Khajiit already starts on a strong footing. A new player can’t go wrong with this particular race.
Medium armor is the way to go in order to take advantage of the Cutpurse Skill. It also strikes a good balance between protection and maneuverability. Robustness increases the recovery rate of all three attributes. Lunar Blessings increases maximum Health, Stamina, and Magicka. Lastly, and most importantly, is Feline Ambush. Rogues look to end fights before they even begin. Feline Ambush accomplishes that goal by amplifying critical hit damage. Unsuspecting enemies don’t stand a chance against these wily cats.
