Paramount’s ‘My Little Pony’ Movie Is Headed To Netflix

Streaming platforms everywhere continue to snap up whatever IP’s they can in hopes of getting an edge on the competition. As more and more films are set to premiere on streaming services as exclusive offerings, it behooves everyone with a platform to get their hands on something that can’t be seen anywhere else, and no one is more prolific in the field of exclusives than Netflix, which has now has acquired the upcoming My Little Pony film.

The streaming giant, as one of the first services to rise to prominence, has for many years been perfecting the art of purchasing, bankrolling, and developing original feature films and TV shows, and has only recently faced competition from the likes of Disney and Warner Bros. They’re not going down without a fight, however, and the company has recently acquired something that will go over big with younger audiences.

The My Little Pony franchise has been a hit with children, particularly young girls, ever since the original toy line came out. Since then, the IP has had multiple generations of TV shows, films, books, and more, and has maintained a fairly consistent level of popularity. So, of course, Hasbro has been plugging away on a CG film in the franchise, which was set to release to theaters in cooperation with Paramount.

That was the plan until Netflix came in, however, and offered up enough money to convince Hasbro to release the film to the streamer instead. My Little Pony will now be distributed worldwide by Netflix, with the exception of China, and the service plans to unveil the feature film later this year.

Netflix has been pushing heavily into the field of animated content, investing in both anime and western animation. This move follows the company’s announcement of both a suite of animated originals, as well as acquisitions like The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On the Run.

This latest My Little Pony film is set to be a soft-reboot of sorts, meant to introduce a new generation of kids to the world of Equestria and the franchise. It intends to be a family movie for all ages featuring colorful characters and lighthearted fun, so it should be a nice addition to the Netflix catalog when it finally arrives.

My Little Pony is expected to debut on Netflix later in 2021.
