Resident Evil 5 polarized longtime fans of the series with its action sensibilities. Regardless of how someone feels about it compared to the earlier survival horror titles, the cooperative mechanics are undeniably incredible. Players can go through the linear campaign from start to finish with a friend, either locally or online.
In an age where many cooperative experiences are living titles, going through a traditional campaign with a definitive ending is almost refreshing. For anybody looking for something more after going through the 2009 title, the ten games below should suffice. Unlike games as a service like Destiny or Avengers, these adventures often have a more concrete structure.
10 Call Of Duty: Black Ops III
Multiplayer has always been an integral part of the Call of Duty experience, and several titles even have cooperative game modes such as zombies. Few of them let players go through the story campaign with friends, however. Black Ops III does not have the best campaign of the franchise, but it makes up for any shortcomings with its cooperative action. The level design accommodates for this well with many open, arena-like areas.
9 Gears Of War
Microsoft came into their second console generation taking names. While the first Xbox had Halo, the Xbox 360 racked up a decent amount of exclusives, not the least of which was Gears of War. The cover-based gameplay is not for everyone, but going through it with a friend certainly enhances the campaign. Gears 5 still allows for split-screen play, which is refreshing to hear in this day and age.
8 A Way Out
A Way Out is definitely unique even among the cooperative games on this list. The title can be played either split-screen or online, but the screen does not change either way.
The narrative is at the forefront of this adventure, making for numerous gameplay mechanics and asymmetrical objectives between players. Hazelight Studios, founded by Josef Fares, is currently working on It Takes Two, which seems to go for a similar gameplay style, only with a less-grounded aesthetic.
7 Halo (Entire Series)
Halo’s multiplayer is legendary and changed the industry in several ways. Not only did it establish Microsoft as a force to be reckoned with in the gaming space, but Halo 2’s online component made online multiplayer a desirable aspect of console games. While the competitive modes are the stars, one must not ignore the ability to play through almost all the campaigns cooperatively. Halo 5: Guardians loses points for not allowing split-screen co-op.
6 Left 4 Dead
Zombies have been a part of the zeitgeist since George A. Romero’s 1968 masterpiece, Night of the Living Dead. While many argue the undead have been played out, Left 4 Dead will never grow old. More than a decade after its sequel released, and the game still has a dedicated community going strong. Turtle Rock Studios, the developer of the original two games (only under a different name), is currently answering fans’ calls for a continuation with the spiritual successor, Back 4 Blood.
5 Resident Evil Revelations 2
Resident Evil 6 left much to be desired, even for fans of Resident Evil 5’s hectic cooperative action. However, spin-offs stepped in to fill the void. Resident Evil Revelations 2’s campaign puts an asymmetrical spin on the co-op, making it perfect for playing with a less experienced friend.
Fortunately, the Raid Mode is still there for two veteran Resident Evil fans to test their skills. The RPG mechanics and level design help this mode shine even brighter than most entries’ Mercenaries modes.
4 Cuphead
Cuphead was announced and shown off years before its release, bringing plenty of hype with it. Fortunately, it managed to live up to expectations with a combination of a glorious aesthetic, old-school gameplay influenced by Contra, and brutal difficulty. Going into the journey with a friend does not even make it much easier, but at least buddies can share the tears. Fans still have a DLC expansion to look forward to, called The Delicious Last Course.
3 Rainbow Six: Vegas
While Rainbow Six is currently at the top of its game with Siege, some fans still yearn for the days when the series included single-player campaigns. Rainbow Six: Vegas‘ squad-based first-person shooter campaign can be ventured through with a friend locally. The game still comes from a time when military shooters were not trying to emulate Call of Duty, which makes it feel fresh almost fifteen years after release.
2 Kayne And Lynch: Dead Men
IO Interactive is notable for Hitman and is currently sitting on top of the world with Hitman 3. In 2007 and 2010 they released two Kayne & Lynch games. The third-person shooters were met with mixed receptions, but even an okay experience becomes fantastic when playing with friends. The story follows two extremely irredeemable criminals doing what they can to keep their lives together. The sequel ends with a wild cliffhanger, but a sequel will most likely never come out.
1 TimeSplitters
Debuting as a PS2 launch title, the TimeSplitters trilogy is a cult classic of its generation. The time travel hook and large cast of characters helped it stand out from the pack. The third game even had a more involved story packed with comedy. Unfortunately, the series never made it into future hardware generations. It is still more than worth plugging in a PS2 to go through any of the three games’ campaigns with a friend.
