Without a doubt, The Legend of Zelda has become one of the most iconic video game franchises of all time. Ever since the release of the first game in 1986, The Legend of Zelda has produced numerous games primarily revolving around Link and Princess Zelda’s various incarnations. Of course, given that The Legend of Zelda franchise is exclusive to Nintendo, the RPG series is oftentimes the reason why players pick up a Nintendo console.
When the Nintendo Switch released back in 2017, the company made a smart move by releasing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as one of the hybrid console’s launch games. This resulted in the Switch having a highly successful launch, given that it attracted both veteran players of The Legend of Zelda franchise as well as series newcomers. As the Switch continues to make strides in console gaming, here are all The Legend of Zelda games currently available on the Switch, and a list of titles that are rumored to release on the hybrid console as well.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains one of the most popular games on the Switch right now. Despite releasing nearly four years ago alongside the Switch console’s launch, Breath of the Wild continues to captivate veterans and newcomers to Zelda thanks to its open-world and its unique approach to a Zelda game. Currently, fans are still waiting for more news and the release of Breath of the Wild 2, which Nintendo already announced back at E3 2019.
Other Zelda games that are now available on the Switch include Hyrule Warriors, a hack and slash adventure game that dumps the intense puzzles of core Zelda games in favor of more action-packed gameplay. In that similar vein, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, is another hack and slash game that serves as a prequel to Breath of the Wild.
Players can also pick up The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, a remake of the classic 1993 game, as well as Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necromancer, where players control Link and Zelda with rhythmic combat. Finally, players looking for a nostalgic trip should check out several of the classic Zelda games available for free with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription; including titles such as The Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass – Although most fans of The Legend of Zelda are probably anticipating the release of Breath of the Wild 2, some are wondering whether Nintendo plans to bring more classic Zelda games on Switch. At the moment, Nintendo still hasn’t announced anything. However, several days ago, a rumor surfaced online about the possibility of a remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
This rumor started after several fans discovered Nintendo filing a mysterious new trademark for Phantom Hourglass in Australia. It is still unknown what Nintendo plans to do with this new trademark. But, insiders theorize that the company could release a remaster of Phantom Hourglass to celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – There are also rumors of Nintendo remastering The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, one of the most popular entries in the franchise. Like Phantom Hourglass, this rumor stemmed from Nintendo renewing Ocarina of Time’s trademark in Australia and Europe back in 2020. Unfortunately, it’s been almost a year since Nintendo renewed the game’s trademark, and the company hasn’t made any comment regarding the rumor. However, players hoping to see a remaster of this classic game shouldn’t lose hope, given that Nintendo may be holding off any announcement until the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, which falls on February 21, 2021.
