The studio behind the well-received The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake, Grezzo, is staffing up for its next project. Some new job listings from the previous Link’s Awakening dev offer some clues as to what the studio might be working on next.
Grezzo has a long history of partnering with Nintendo, mostly on Zelda games. The studio worked on the 3DS remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, as well as the 3DS-exclusive Tri Force Heroes. The developer also worked on the 3DS version Luigi’s Mansion released in 2018. Grezzo released Link’s Awakening in 2019, which was lauded for its old-school Zelda charm and whimsy, and went on to become one of the best-selling Legend of Zelda games on Switch. The studio has worked outside of Nintendo a little as well, including with publisher FuRYu on The Alliance Alive.
Several new job listings were spotted on Grezzo’s website for a programmer, an effects designer, and a UI designer. When translated, the description says that the aesthetic of the game is meant to be “medieval,” “stylish” and that it is, “Not photoreal but a ‘design’ of real elements.” The programmer job description in particular says that the title will be made in the Unity engine.
While the description of Grezzo’s new game suggests The Legend of Zelda may be its source, Grezzo’s front page says, “Would you like to improve your skills with us by developing a new original work?” That sounds like Grezzo is looking to make a new original IP of its own, but it could also mean that the studio is going to create its own original Zelda game instead of a remake, like Grezzo did with Tri Force Heroes. It is also possible that any of these details are being mistranslated or have a different intent in Japanese.
Regardless, more details on what Grezzo might be working on probably won’t come for some time if the studio is still actively hiring for the project. It is more likely that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel will be released before Grezzo is ready to show its next game, whatever it may be.
There have been rumors that Nintendo is planning to release Switch Pro or Super Switch, and that Breath of the Wild 2 may release alongside it. Nintendo has denied these rumors, but a more powerful Switch could help keep Nintendo from falling too far behind the power of the new PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
