Tom Hiddleston Helped Owen Wilson Prepare For ‘Loki’ With MCU Lectures

Owen Wilson, who is most known for his appearances in comedies and indie dramas, is probably the last actor fans would have expected to be cast in a Marvel production. But the Bliss star is set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Loki, where he will assume the role of a character he admits he doesn’t really know much about.

Enter Tom Hiddleston: his Loki co-star and primary lore resource. In an interview on The Jess Cagle Show, Wilson admitted that he didn’t do any comics research into his role—instead, his preparation consisted of an in-depth crash course on the MCU from Hiddleston himself. Coining them “Loki lectures”, he explained how Hiddleson walked him through everything he needed to know about the MCU over the span of a few days, explaining important parts of the lore and even showing clips from past movies to help him understand how they all tie into the Loki series.

Wilson will be playing Mobius, a mid-level member of the Time Variance Authority who has the tricky task of keeping tabs on the god of mischief himself. The upcoming Disney+ series follows the events in Avengers: Endgame, in which that version of Loki used the Tesseract to create alternate timelines in order to evade capture. Because Mobius is the character who must decipher Loki’s complexities and bring out his inner good, it is vital that Wilson understands Hiddleston’s character, as well as the challenges his own character will encounter as the story progresses.

Loki is the first MCU project in which Hiddleston will take on the title role. His portrayal of the trickster god over the years has won the hearts of Marvel fans across the globe, making him one of the most treasured stars in the franchise. Yet, after three Thor films and three Avengers films, there is still so much to learn about Loki. The Disney+ series hopes to explore the character’s struggle with identity and the tug-of-war between good and evil that he constantly deals with.

Starring alongside Wilson and Hiddleston are Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Kate Herron of Sex Education and Daybreak will direct and executive produce the series, and Michael Waldron of Rick & Morty will serve as writer and creator of the show.

Loki will premiere on Disney+ this May.
