A ‘Paranormal Activity’ Franchise Reboot Is In The Works

Paranormal Activity reboot is on the way from both Jason Blum and the creator of the first installment, Oren Peli. This is the seventh film in the series, with the latest being 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.

Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon will pen the script, while filmmaker Will Eubank, who last made the Kristen Stewart thriller Underwater, is attached to direct. Landon, a frequent collaborator of Blum’s, wrote Paranormal Activity 23, and 4, as well as Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. His latest project, Freaky, came out last year and was considered a critical success. The horror-comedy followed a young girl (Kathryn Newton) who somehow swaps bodies with a deranged serial killer (Vince Vaughn).

The original Paranormal Activity was released in 2007 and made waves for being filmed in just one week and grossing over $193 million on just a $15,000 budget. The series, which drew comparisons to The Blair Witch Project, first followed a middle-class couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who are haunted by a supernatural demon in their new suburban home. Featherston and Sloat set up a camera in their bedroom to document the paranormal activity that occurred while they were sleeping.

Following the success of the first four films, two spinoff series were made (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension). Unlike the prior sequels, the spinoff didn’t explore the Featherston family’s haunted history. Through six films, the franchise grossed over $890.3 million worldwide.

As of now, not much is known about Paranormal Activity 7, as information about the plot and characters have yet to be released. Per THR, the upcoming sequel will continue to use the found footage device and is being described as an “unexpected retooling” of the franchise.

Paranormal 7 is scheduled to be released on March 4, 2022.
