The Full Effects of Red Dead Redemption 2’s Oddest Location Have Yet to Be Seen

Red Dead Redemption 2 contains a chapter which strikes many fans as odd. Immediately following a botched bank job in Saint Denis that leads to the deaths of Lenny and Hosea, the surviving robbers Arthur, Dutch, Bill, Javier, and Micah attempt to escape America by boat and are shipwrecked on the fictional Caribbean island of Guarma, to the east of Cuba.

Guarma ends up being the setting for all of Chapter 5 of Red Dead Redemption 2. For a game so carefully crafted, the inclusion of Guarma left many players confused. This has led to speculation that Rockstar may have actually included Guarma in the game for other reasons, but the full effects of the location’s inclusion in Red Dead 2 may be yet to be seen.

Guarma is an alarming change of pace for Red Dead Redemption 2. Not only are players dropped in a completely new location, but the game’s genre seems to shift in both the visuals and the gameplay, with Arthur Morgan losing his horse and items at the start of Chapter 5.

The plot on Guarma sees the surviving members of the Van Der Linde Gang get tied up in a revolution aimed at overthrowing the plantation island’s regime. During their final escape, Arthur even kills the island’s ruler, Colonel Fussar.

However, aside from a key moment where Dutch Van Der Linde strangles an old woman and leads Arthur to further question his judgement, the Guarma plot strikes many fans as a strange turn that’s unrelated to most of the main story. Once the players leaves Guarma, they also aren’t able to return for the rest of the game, and this has led some to speculate about other reasons the island may have been included in the game.

For a start, data miners have found maps of Guarma in Red Dead Redemption 2’s files that depict it as far larger than the area that appears in game. This map may just be for flavor, but it has led some to speculate that only a small part of Guarma was used as an opportunity to test assets for future projects while avoiding having to create a larger area. This is already supported to an extent. Many of the assets that were created for Guarma’s plant life were then reused in Grand Theft Auto Online’s Cayo Perico

It’s even been speculated that Guarma may have been used as an opportunity to create and test assets for Grand Theft Auto 6. There are rumors dating back to 2018 that the next GTA is codenamed “Project Americas” and will take place in Vice City and areas of South America. If so, that might explain Guarma suddenly taking Red Dead players to a tropical island and why the island seems so separate from the rest of the game; Rockstar may have been using Guarma as an opportunity and create and test assets for its next big project. Even if there is no “Project Americas,” the island’s inclusion in Red Dead may hint at Vice City’s return.

Ultimately, however, the reasons for Guarma’s inclusion in Red Dead Redemption 2 remain unknown.  With more and more rumors indicating that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be announced soon (however unlikely), including a Rockstar job listing which possibly hints at a GTA 6 trailer on the way, fans may not have to wait much longer to see if Guarma really was a hint of things to come.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
