Mario Kart is a game series that can unite people young and old. The series serves as a bridge between generations and, apparently, between Presidents and their granddaughters.
United States President Joseph R. Biden made his first trip to Camp David with his family over the weekend. Located in western Maryland and operated by the United States Navy, Camp David has long served as a country retreat for the President and their family; as well as a place to host foreign dignitaries and officials. One of the amenities at Camp David apparently includes a working arcade.
It was at this arcade that President Biden played his granddaughter Naomi at Mario Kart. She posed on Instagram about the trip. According to her, despite being “a little rusty,” President Biden was still able to win “barely.”
From the short video Naomi posted on Instagram, it’s possible to tell that she and President Biden were playing Mario Kart Arcade GP DX. It’s not the latest in the series, as that would be Mario Kart Arcade GP VR. The game was released in 2013 and is a little less content-heavy than it’s console counterpart, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. One can also see that the President was playing as Luigi, while his granddaughter appears to be playing as Princess Peach, who was voted the second most popular racer in Mario Kart.
Doing things like playing games with family or engaging in drifts on the Mario Kart circuit definitely helps to humanize the most powerful man on the planet. The office of the Presidency often serves to mystify the office holder to the American public, and seeing them like this can help bring them down to earth. This also isn’t the first time this Present has tried to appeal to the American public using video games. The Biden Presidential campaign also created an Animal Crossing: New Horizons island called Biden Island to try and appeal to younger voters and encourage them to go to the polls. It was an incredibly well built island, with a lot of facilities like a field office and polling station.
From how Naomi Biden describes her grandfather as “rusty,” one can take it to mean President Biden has played Mario Kart before and was apparently quite good. Perhaps he’s able to get a few rounds in between doing things like keeping an eye on the GameStop stock situation. While it’s doubtful, hopefully he’ll be able to spend some of his free time as President getting back into practice, so he can continue to hold up against his granddaughter.
