Even though Super Mario 3D World is eight years old, it was a launch title on the Wii U in 2013, and a lot of people missed it. That’s because that console in particular was not a hot seller. It came right off the heels of their other flip, the 3DS, a handheld gaming device.
Many thought that this would be it for Nintendo, but they recovered with the 3DS and the Switch is their biggest hit yet. For those that wish to return, or those just starting it for the first time, learning how to handle the additional bonus game, Bower’s Fury, plus the base game’s more interesting quirks, will be essential.
10 What Is Bowser’s Fury?
Super Mario 3D World, for all intents and purposes, is the same Wii U experience. The Bowser’s Fury addition can be played right from the menu without beating that core game and is completely new. It’s almost like a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine and takes place in one big archipelago. Each world, or island, has Cat Shines. Two players assume the role of both Mario and Bowser Jr. to collect enough Cat Shines to defeat the rampaging Bowser.
9 Look Out For Bowser Jr’s Paint Blocks
There are many secrets littering these islands. One of them that is harder to spot is the question-marked graffiti on walls. Unlocking their secrets takes Bowser Jr’s paintbrush.
Usually, it will be something mundane like a power-up, but sometimes there will be a greater treasure. Always keep an eye out for them on walls.
8 The Item Dock
One of the things that makes Bowser’s Fury easy is its item dock. All power-ups gained, from Mushrooms to Cat Bells, will be stored in an accessible dock at the bottom of the screen. Make sure to have at least one of every suit because a certain job might be easier with a particular power. For example, using the cat power to climb walls in order to take a shortcut will save players a great deal of time and hassle.
7 Amiibo Support
Power-ups not only litter these island locations, but they respawn in blocks as well. That means if there is a particular power one wants to stockpile on, all they need to do is back in and out Bowser’s Fury in order to game the system.
There is another way to get a lot of power-ups, and that is through Amiibo. Non-Mario toys will usually generate Mushrooms, but Mario-themed Amiibos should give greater rewards. The 30th anniversary Mario, for example, gives a Super Star.
6 Back In/Back Out
Backing in and out of a game is a good tip, not only for stockpiling power-ups, but also to save in traversal time. Each island usually has five Cat Shines per location. Once one task is done, another will spring up, but not until players leave said location from a good distance. That allows the game to spawn new variants for the new mission. A faster way to do this is to back in and out.
5 Waiting On The Fury
One might notice blocks on the island with Bowser’s face on them. Those will not break with Bowser Jr. or some later power-up. They need Bowser’s power. If one wants to break a particular set of bricks, Mario can lure Bowser’s attacks to the island location in question. If timed right, he will destroy the blocks with his fire power, which usually unlocks more Cat Shines. Be sure to make a mental note on each location of Bowser bricks.
4 The Right Multiplayer For The Right Job
Bowser’s Fury will allow for two players to co-op together. Bowser Jr may not have power-ups, but he is plenty strong on his own. Super Mario 3D World allows for four players to co-op together and even allows online play. If one wants to get collectibles and actually play the game, stick to two players. Any more than that is chaos, so a full party, in other words, should be reserved for goofing around.
3 Don’t Worry About Collectables The First Time Through
On the subject of collectibles, it might be tempting to spend as much time as possible on a single level in order to find the stamps and green stars. This can deter from the point of the game, though, which is simply having fun. It can also be stressful.
The tip here then is to go with the flow the first time around. It may take more time to go back and make a complete run later, but since it is already complete, it won’t take as long.
2 Character Powers
Just like in Super Mario Bros. 2, every playable character has a strength. Toad and Mario are about even with each other without many noticeable differences. Luigi can jump higher than others, though, and most importantly, Peach can glide. If playing solo, pick her. It makes stages a breeze in that pits are no longer a threat, which is usually one of Mario’s most deadliest foes.
1 1-Ups Are Shared
No matter how many people are playing the game, all 1-Ups are shared. First of all, don’t worry too much about them. If a party runs out, they lose their place on the stage. This means they will be booted back to the world map. 1-Ups, then, are more like checkpoints on checkpoints. In Bowser’s Fury, death is counted down by coins just like in Super Mario Odyssey.
