Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies – What Is Projekt Endstation?

In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, players have a chance to dive into a new Zombies experience. After the Aether timeline ended in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, many fans wondered what would come next in the series. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War making reference to famous operations like “Projekt Endstation,” fans are starting to realize that the Aether timeline may be just beginning, rather than a permanent resolution.

There is a huge amount of lore scattered across Call of Duty and its many Zombies game modes. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s new Zombies experience is drawing from that lore and reviving it with a Russian twist. Rather than Germans causing all the damage this time, it is a need to end the Cold War that pushes countries past the point of a peaceful resolution.

To make the lore even more interesting, it all still follows the pattern of the Aether timeline. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has leaked images and made references to experiments that only appeared in the Aether timeline. This has caused many to nickname the new world “Dark Aether” and talk about the revival of Call of Duty’s favorite undead threat.

Projekt Endstation was created during World War II by Doctor Kurt Diebner. The site was a remote location in Morasko, Poland, and the project was directed by Doctor Ulrich Vogel with the goal of creating atomic weapons using their experimental machine: the cyclotron particle accelerator. This project was started during the initial Call of Duty Zombies timeline, but it had an unintended side effect.

On March 7th, 1944, the cyclotron malfunctioned and created a dimensional tear, ripping a hole into the Dark Aether. Vogel’s report reads that the cyclotron was powering itself five days later, and through the use of their scientific tools they realized the existence of the Dark Aether, parallel to the known universe. With Dark Aether discovered, Projekt Endstation shifted their focus from atomic research and instead worked towards harnessing the power of Aetherium.

Half a year later, on January 27th, 1945, the Nazi initiative lost control of the Dark Aether experiment. The facility was quickly overrun by zombies and abandoned until the Soviets discovered the location filled with the undead.  In an effort to stop the breach, the Soviet forces sent men into the facility and locked them inside, hoping that they could deactivate the cyclotron. After several attempts, they eventually were successful.

In 1983, the Russian military was desperate to end the Cold War. A branch of the military from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War known as the Omega Group found documentation of Projekt Endstation and decided to harness the Dark Aether for their own use. Reaching the facility, they found the abandoned site as the Russians left it originally.

Entering the facility, Omega Group forced the doors open and reactivated the cyclotron under the orders of Lieutenant Orlov. Instead of one major tear, the world was covered in smaller dimensional tears and the zombie invasion begun. A majority of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Zombie story revolves around a CIA-backed organization known as Requiem, and their efforts to stop the dimensional breaches.

Several things resulted from Projekt Endstation and the many connected groups involved with the Dark Aether experiments. The forming of Requiem is one of the biggest changes, as a government task force was directly assigned to containing these dimensional breaches. Requiem forces were able to enter the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Projekt Endstation facility and resurrect Orlov, the man responsible for turning the machine on. With his help, the organization was able to dismantle the cyclotron and destroy the facility once and for all.

Aside from the cyclotron, Projekt Endstation did have other notable discoveries that can be seen scattered around the facility. The name of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombie map, D.I.E. Maschine, is actually the name of an invention from Projekt Endstation. Known as the Decompressive Isotropic Estrangement Machine, the invention was created to harvest Aetherium originally. While the invention was redesigned as a wonder weapon, its original purpose still came from this German initiative.

In companion with it, the D.I.E Machine came with a D.I.E. Remote Control that could detect the machine’s location and allow for remote usage. This was created, presumably, to aid in recovery operations from Dark Aether harvesting missions. One of the more important tools for Dark Aether research is the Aetherscope, which can uncover strange phenomena outside the parameters of space-time. This item can view the spectral reflection of past events from other dimensions.

The last notable creation of Projekt Endstation is a device created by Doctor Vogel known as Der Wechsler. This object acted as a decontamination chamber that could restore brain functionality to those harmed by Aetherium. While this invention was a great solution to the Zombie problem, the Decontamination Agent was stolen in 1945 and hidden in a nearby tree.

This is only the beginning of a new chapter in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Zombie lore. The developers have a new chance to approach the Zombies’ experience and evolve the franchise above the bar set during the original Aether Timeline. So far, fan reception has been positive, but the community is hoping that the developers will do more than just recreate old maps.

The Dark Aether timeline is impactful because it resonates with past lore events like Projekt Endstation. There is a fine line between new and old content, and as long as the developers can balance that line, the Call of Duty Zombies experience has a bright future.

Projekt Endstation acts as a spark for a much larger engagement. With portals being detected across the globe, there are countless locations scattered through Call of Duty: Black Ops lore that could be the next operation. Fans can only wait and see what Soviet plot may cause the next burst of undead activity that they will need to move in and slaughter.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
