2017 was a crazy year for Nintendo. They not only launched the Switch console but two of their biggest games ever with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. The latter of the two wasn’t a launch game, but getting two of Nintendo’s best-selling franchises in the same year is still pretty special.
The previous console, the Wii U, did launch with a Mario game via Super Mario 3D World. It’s back now on Switch as the second core 3D Mario adventure sans the collection from last year. Of the two, which is the better pick?
10 Multiplayer: Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Odyssey does have multiplayer but barely. A second player can take control of Cappy, but their controls are limited. They are more like assistants. Super Mario 3D World on the other hand was designed with multiplayer in mind. Not only does the main game support four players at once, but the new addition, Bowser’s Fury, supports two-player co-op.
9 Worlds: Super Mario Odyssey
The places Mario goes in Super Mario Odyssey really make the game feel like the adventure of a lifetime. It goes beyond the typical grass land, desert land, ice land, and so forth from his past.
These are all great in games like Super Mario 3D World, but there is simply no comparison to what this title accomplished. There is a reason why the title is so fitting.
8 Levels: Super Mario 3D World
While the worlds in Super Mario Odyssey beat out its competitor, the individual levels are better in the other. The open-world nature was good for Super Mario Odyssey, but areas were perhaps too open at times. Super Mario 3D World was more inventive with its level design. They are also fun to go through quickly in small bite-sized chunks, which make them better for the Switch’s handheld appeal.
7 Costumes: Super Mario Odyssey
Along with the themes of its worlds, Mario also got to dress up. The costumes seemed to be an attempt at fitting him in more with each location. It’s too bad, then, that there weren’t any sports arenas for Mario to suit up in. Some of his costumes also called back to his previous adventures, all the way back to the NES. It was a celebration of the character, which was fun, even if the costumes didn’t do anything special.
6 Characters: Super Mario 3D World
What Super Mario 3D World lacked in costumes, it made up for in characters. Being able to play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach was a callback of its own. This dynamic had not been seen since Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES. It was about time Princess Peach got to be a hero again. Seeing her various costume changes from her Fire Flower suit to her cat suit were all fun in their own ways.
5 Powers: Super Mario Odyssey
The Mario power-ups are as classic as the character himself. However, even though Super Mario 3D World has a great list of them, like the cat suit, Super Mario Odyssey changed the game. Possessing things was not a new gameplay mechanic in 2017, but like Nintendo does with everything they borrow, they put their own unique spin on it. From becoming a frog to disguising as a manhole cover, the Capture powers are all memorable.
4 Collectables: Super Mario 3D World
There is a lot to do in Super Mario Odyssey, as one would expect from an open-world game. However, collecting Moons in that game is not that fun since there are way too many. It becomes tedious after the first hundred, which is being generous. The amount of Green Stars and Stamps finds a better balance in Super Mario 3D World. In this case, it is a quality over quantity argument.
3 Music: Super Mario Odyssey
Both games have classic music one would hope for in a Mario game. Nothing about Super Mario 3D World’s score is bad. It’s just not that memorable aside from the main theme and a few other tracks. Super Mario Odyssey plays around a lot more with different types of music to better fit world themes. Plus, “Jump Up Super Star” is a real banger.
2 Mini Games: Super Mario 3D World
Like the collectibles, there are a lot of things to do that might constitute as mini-games in Super Mario Odyssey. However, none of them were so good that they spawned a spinoff.
This is in reference to the Captain Toad mini-games in Super Mario 3D World. They were too good just to be a one-note side level, and thankfully, that too was ported to Switch.
1 Verdict: Super Mario 3D World
Both of these games are like two sides of the same coin. There are a lot of factors to consider. If one wants an easier adventure for all ages with multiplayer, grab Super Mario 3D World. For something new for the franchise that tries a lot of things differently, go with Super Mario Odyssey. They are both great choices but for this verdict, the overall better game is Super Mario 3D World with Bowser’s Fury really being the icing on the mushroom cake that helped it win.
